New Member from North of the Border

Hey y'all.

I'm a just a young lad (23 and counting) here to join the forum ranks. I live in Calgary, Alberta. I picked up a 'running' (cough) '78 in December. Apparently it sat for more than 5 years before it was sold to a salvage shop. Almost everything except the engine and fuel tank has been stripped off at some point as I try my gosh darndest to restore it the best I can. Picked up some great tips and I figured it was time to get initiated into the online cult of GoldWings.

Here's a picture of what the bike looked like last week. Hoping to have it together and running for real by April.

And yes, I did the belts ;)

Welcome to the Club, young lad from North of the Border! :oldies

Appears as though, at least cosmetically, the bike was well cared for. tumb2

Were most of the 'stripped off parts' retrieved with the purchase of this bike, too?

Cool - another 78 joins the ranks. Welcome!

Good bones, and looks very clean. I like that it has the chrome back shell for the headlight. 78/79's had gone to plastic black. I got a chrome one for mine as well just because they are nicer.

Thanks all for the warm welcome.

I can see how my wording may have been unclear. I have been the one 'stripping off' all the parts.

The picture there is after about 125 hours of work. All the covers, levers, forks, etc. have been sanded and polished. Chrome was cleaned and polished. I also sanded and repainted areas of the frame. New fork fluid and seal, rear shocks, radiator flush and paint, straightened seat pan and recovered the seat, new brake lines, pads, and pistons, some faulty switches have been replaced, new tires, new hoses (except fuel, since I didn't feel like spending $50 US for each one), carbs cleaned, new points, plugs and wires, and new wiring in the back since the existing cables had been trough a few cut 'n' tape procedures, replaced faulty condenser, solonoid, etc (the bike would only start about half the time before that).

Right now the covers are being buffed by a pro (a little more finesse required to polish paint than metal)

Still on my to-do list:
-ignition timing using Randakk's 'split the difference' technique
-carb synch
-ride the dickens out of it
