Hello from CA 76 LTD's

#1

Post by Olsonic »

Happy new year! I have a couple of LTD's that I recently acquired.
I'd forgotten how nice the GL1000's power, handling and looks are. Until last summer, my last GL1000 was a '78 dresser. That was in '93. I worked at Diablo Canyon then, and rode it to work every day for 2 years. Great ride. I've owned a variety of bikes since, mostly smaller street bikes.

I was looking for a bigger road bike (than my Suzuki T500) last summer when I saw a '76 GL1000 in Placerville CA for sale- almost 400 miles from home. Seller said it was a "Limited". I had no idea what that meant, but it looked nice, so I hit the road with the van. Looked great and ran OK, so I grabbed a u-haul trailer and loaded her up.
Cleaned up real nice. Had the carbs done by Pistol Pete and I was on the road. Didn't take long to learn (thanks mostly to NGW forums) that the guages, seat, headers (chrome) and rocker covers (chrome) weren't correct. No problem right? On to ebay and the Web! Not so fast: couldn't find a seat or black-face guages to save my life.

I Found another LTD in Phoenix that had been sitting indoors for 24 years on Craigslist. Almost a giveaway price. Thought I could pick it up and use for parts. Jumped in the van and headed out for a 560 mile drive. Got there after dark, looked it over with a cellphone light and loaded her up. Got home and was amazed at the cosmetics on that bike. Not a nick or ding anywhere. Just about perfect paint, striping and chrome. Engine turned free! Comp 150*4! The only thing not correct were the low bars. Replaced and rebuilt the usual (water pump, tank, belts, Carbs, brake lines, fluids etc).
Haven't installed the carbs yet- Broke my hand Dec 1st. Been staring hard at those beauties for 5 weeks. Cast coming off next week and I'll be all over it.

So now, almost by accident, I have 2 really nice GL1000 LTD's.
That's my story. Thanks to these furums. And I'm STILL looking for those guages

Hey, Olsonic, no fair posting up tempting info about your new-to-you LTD's and not posting pictures of them! :IDTS:

Welcome to the club. There is information available about putting new faces on the gauges and I think it is in shoptalk. Some members have done it with great success.
