Hey from Toronto

Post by Unlimited »

hi everyone,

just picked up an 85 ltd as a project bike. nothing seriously wrong with the bike other than a loose rear wheel bearing, leaking forks, and having every available accessory from the last 30 years tacked on to it. i was looking for a late 70s to early 80s ujm style shaft drive bike to restore and take on leisurely rides and found myself looking at goldwings. couple of gw folks were nice enough to let me take theirs for a short spin around the block and i liked the overall dynamics of the bike. someone beat me to one of the nice ones on sale and i found this 85 ltd. fell in love with the sound and response of teh engine but could not take it on a ride due to above mentioned issues...got a great deal on it...

short term goal is to reduce weight and make it road worthy...hopefully get a couple of months of saddle time this year.
longer term goal, if i like its handling after removing fairings and extra weight, is to make it a customized minimalist sport tourer with only the gadgets that i want...wish me luck and hope i find the parts i need!

Welcome and good luck. My project came with a seized engine so I had to get a replacement so a Hoser up in Toronto sold me one. So I guess we have some things in common. Ehh?

Thanks for the welcomes. I'll be asking a lot of questions when I get started with this. In the meantime, here is what my baby looks like right now. Had to temporarily put it together to make room in the garage for something else... That's why it looks like it has a problem keeping body parts on...

Welcome from Kitchener. I picked up that same bike last year . Have ridden it all year and it's terrific. Slightly different than my '79 'Wing. I still haven't figured out how to make the trip/cruise control computer thing work. Good thing it doesn't need to work to still enjoy the ride.

Unlimited-bstuebing: Have been refurbishing my '85 LTD for the past 19 months or so. Have a lot of files you may be interested in such as the service manual, supplement and electrical trouble shooting in PDF formats plus a wealth (I think anyway) of other files. If you PM me with your email addresses, I can send via wetransfer (use for large files). Also keeping a spreadsheet with P/Ns and alternatives as well.

Start a new thread when you have an issue, and this and other forums will assist you in getting the issue resolved.

Cheers
