Long time listener, first time caller

#1

Post by claylives »

Corny, I know.

Hello everyone!! I've been coming to NGW for a while for research and fix-it help, you guys are always awesome and seem to have tons of knowledge behind you!

Now that the butt-kissing is out of the way, I'm finally starting a major wing project, well major to me. I have a 1983 1100 Interstate that I'm converting into a standard Wing. I hope this site will keep being just as good as it always has and I look forward to talking with all of you!

Thanks!

Very cool. This place was a huge resource to me when I was getting started. Best of luck, and we'd love to see some photos of the bike!

Welcome from Wisconsin! 1100's are really pretty easy to 'nakedize' as the wiring and such is all sub-harnesses, and is plug-n-play. Hardest part is finding original parts, such as the headlight 'ears' if that's the way you want to go. There are lots of aftermarket options that work great, though. Good luck and enjoy the ride!

Current Rides:
'Grumpy' - '81 Standard, now fully dressed.
'Layla' - '81 Standard w/dealer installed fairing and Hondaline bags.
'Scarlett' '76 'Survivor' nekkid as a j-bird!

Under Construction:
The 'Jalopy' '78-'79 Mash-up
'Quikie' '81 gl1100I back on the lift, project with the step-son!

In The Shed:
'81 gl1100I barn find aka "Josie, the farmer's daughter." (almost comatose build)
'77 gl1000, roller parts bike.
'82 gl1100I, 'Old Crusty' titled roller parts bike (free!)
'82 gl1100I, My first 'Wing, and an expensive lesson!

Thanks to everyone for the warm welcome!!

Track, one of my first hurdles will be wiring. I don't know what to do with the big mess of wires that used to hide under the fairing counter-weight.

If you're going back to a stock style headlight and bucket, they will mostly fit inside it. It does take some creative routing. I've also seen guys use the plastic box and make a cover, then kind of camouflage it behind the headlight. You might check out some build threads in the customizing forum for more ideas...

That's what I wasn't sure about. I like the stock look but its not an absolute must, stock buckets can be hard to find.

This gives me a place to start. Thanks!

Honda used the same or very similar buckets on several bikes/years, IIRC. There are many choices for aftermarket 'ears' that clamp on to the fork tubes, as well. Good luck with the search!
