Hello from Austin TX

#1

Post by Robwes79 »

Hello. New GL owner. I picked mine up early last year. It is an 80 GL1100i. Since having it, I have done quite a bit of work to it. Currently it is parked on its center stand with it's guts spilled over in my garage. My bike was recently hit (I was not on it) and I have had to replace several parts. While replacing the damaged parts I decided to go ahead and do some cosmetic changes as well. One of the things I'm changing is my turn signals. The ones that were on there was LED signals but too small. Figured it would be an easy swap buying some better ones. Well the signals arrived a couple days ago and I am a little stumped. They have three wires and the colors are different from what is on my bike. I would hate to have to cut the new signals to wire them in only to find out they don't work. They were too expensive (140.00) to do that. Do I need a different wiring harness? Next thing I am stumped on is the headlight. There is an ugly sheel/box behind the headlight that houses all the wiring for the bike. Seems like waaaay to many wires seeing how I do not have the fairing on my bike. I figured I could just pull the box and reroute the wires under the false tank and heat shrink and reconnect. Nope, not happening. The way the wires are jumped from one to the other (basically like this uuuu) which makes splitting the wires off to where they need to be impossible. Any ideas on how to do this? I've seen many naked wings where that she'll is not present and the headlight is mounted properly, not to the shell like mine. TIA guys.

Robert

Robert welcome, lots of wires for sure! I will be removing my fairing this winter, not looking forward to the spaghetti pile.
I like my stock signal lights and will replace the bulbs with leds.
Good luck with the spaghetti!

Welcome! As far as the signals you bought and the wiring. Standard Honda signal wires - Right Signal = Blue wire. Running is Blue/White, and then Green is the ground. Left Signal = Orange wire. Running is Orange/White. Ground is Green. The grounds are supposed to splice into a common ground with the headlight. In my case I bought some heat shrink bullet connectors and put them on the signal wires and connected them to the factory connectors located in the headlight bucket (mine is an early 1000, but the same principal applies). Obviously, use whichever connector/method you like. You also don't necessarily have to use the running light feature of your new lights and could simply use them for signal lights.

As far as being seen and size. Those two concepts aren't mutually exclusive. My High Tech Speed X-Arc signals are less than an inch in Diameter, but insanely bright, and easily seen in full noon daylight from a very far distance away. This is the rear running lights for an idea, and no, those aren't the brake lights. https://www.ngwclub.com/forum/download/ ... p?id=58615

Thank you for all the replies. I think I have the wiring part figured out. I'm taking the headlight and headlight buck/brackets off of this 80 cb900c I have and using that. It will allow me to tuck away a lot of the wires inside the headlight itself. As for the LED turn signals i have, i am still stumped as the color coding is different and there werent any instruction/diagram in the box. Ill post a picture. The coloring is black, purple and blue. Im guessing the purple is running, blue is left or right and black is neutral? Also, sorry for the delay in response, i didnt know anyone had responded to my oost as i did not get an email notification. Ill look into that. Again, thank you.
