Hello from Wisconsin

#1

Post by tankbuster »

Hello all, my name is Bill from Northeast Wisconsin. I presently own a 1975 Goldwing (full dresser, Hope this does not disqualify me.) I had the bike running fine, but keep breaking carb slides. :( Im thinking of a single carb conversion, since the slides are rare and super costly. (replaced 4 of them in 2 years). Not that happy with it. I call mine "headache". since every time I replace a part something else fails. I will post pics later.

Welcome, Bill !
Don't be concerned over having a full dressed GL1000.
If modifying my 1975 into a trike would have "disqualified" me, I would have been gone 5 years ago. ;)

Breaking carb slides? Are you experiencing backfires into the air filter housing?

Thanks gltriker, I have not noticed any backfiring. Last spring I removed the carbs to clean and recheck the float height. This bike was my father in law's and he would ride it and put it away for the winter. It sat for 5 years and I removed the carbs to clean, thats when the cascading failures started. So far I replaced the ignition (dyna S) Last fall it was smoking very bad, no power... had to crank the throttle full just to keep it running. Im getting sick of the 4 carb setup and trying to locate the slides at 50 bucks apiece Im running out of cash and patience with this thing. Some days I would like to drop a match on it! (sorry, just need to vent)

Welcome from another Wisconsinite. Breaking carb slides is a sure indication that something else is seriously out of wack, IMHO. The slide breaking is the result of something else (like a significant backfire, as Cliff suggested), not the cause of the problem. If it were me, I'd be doing some significant troubleshooting before throwing another variable (like a single carb conversion) into the mix. My 2 cents...

Thank you, Track T. I went through the timing issues I thought I had per Dyna instructions. All was fine. I cant think of what would be so out of whack that would cause major backfire. Im lost. looks like another season out on the DL. Thank God for my backup. (1986 XV 1100 Virago)

Is it the same slide failure or different ones. Many things like Lean fuel mixture or a tight intake valve adjustment can cause popping back thru the intake and cause slide failure. When talking about backfire in this case it means popping back through the intake, Kind of a muffled pop and not the loud exhaust back fire often thought of. When there is a pop back in the intake the slide is slammed against the stop and it fails.

You might want to post in the tech forum, more views. I just think that there's something else wrong that changing carbs won't fix.

tankbuster,
Have you observed whether the hard white plastic insert, located on the top of the CV piston cover, has been fractured or totally missing on any of these "broken carb slides" locations?
That single component, if you will, is the range of motion limiting, "bump stop" that salukispeed is referring to. tumb2

I cant remember what carb slides that were broken... Im thinking of just putting the whole project on the back burner. I just dont have the info to get this bike running. Right now I stuffed in my barn. I will have to gather more info. Throwing more parts and money at it isnt in the cards. give me a couple of weeks, Ill look at it again. Welcome to NGW. I feel the same way with my wife's car that I've been replacing the engine, going on two years. Some things just happen. Try to keep your momentum up. Don't get to discouraged tankbuster, your 75 needs you.
