So I'm buying a wing!!!!

#1

Post by DriggNation »

Hello everyone. Buying my first goldwing tomorrow. Been reading up on the site for a basic wing education. Love the look of the bikes and I get the impression they are solid to boot. I'm buying a in progress restore of a 79. He started the project and is unable to continue due to health issues. It's been stripped, frame has been powder coated and forks rebuilt. This is my first bike build so any experience on the best route to take To be as efficient as possible with my time. Has the poorboy conversion been done on the gl1000's. Wanna go ahead and get the stator issues of of be way. Thanks in advance for the help and all the school'n I've gotten so far.

Stators are not an issue unless you intend to load it up with heavy electrical loads like a mobile Christmas tree. Even then, if they are all LED it's not much of a problem. A standard Wing has enough juice to do the job as intended. Just make sure that the plug on the three yellow wires from the stator is not burnt or corroded. If it is, cut it out and solder the wires and cover with shrink wrap.

Welcome from Wisconsin! As Old Fogey says, unless there's a known issue with the stator, or you plan on lots of accessories, don't worry about it. Buying a 'project' can be lots of fun, good and bad, lol. Hopefully the po bagged and tagged all the bits and fasteners...

Congratulations. Remember this site has lots of help, most of it good and remember that there are three manuals available: Honda Shop manual downloadable from NGW, Haynes and Clymer.
Don't be afraid to dig in. Best of luck to you.

Welcome to the club. Sounds like you got a fun project. I would start with the engine. Belts, pulleys, water pump, neutral switch, valves, plugs, rubber, and paint. Then the carbs, fuel tank, and electronics. Feel free to go as you please. Just don't stop. Good luck. Looking forward to pics and updates.

buncha ways to go about it regardless of poorboy, who i haven't heard much of for awhile now,

eitherway, wouldn't worry about being able to go EA with 1000s

Thanks for all the encouragement. Here's the big problem. I'm going back to grab a few more things from him. Everything is well preserved and in amazing shape. Problem is that he has little or no hardware to reassemble it. Outside of ordering every little screw and bolt is there any way to replace the hardware.

Yea, I was going to point out ebay too. They have several lots of bolts and hardware for the GL's. Might pick one up myself, just to have some extras on hand.

Well I bought a running parts bike for $500. Should have everything I need. It's also a 79 so it should all match up. Wiring is going in now. Then brakes, gaskets and timing belt, carb rebuild and the drop the motor in. Sounds so easy. Ha!
