A belated hello from Canada and Phase 1 Resto

#1

Post by Aint_no_bugs »

Hi all,

I'm long overdue in posting a hello to this forum. I bought a '77 GL1000 back in September last year and spent the winter getting it back on the road. Thanks to the robustness of Honda engines and no small measure of help from the tech posts on this forum I was able to get her up and running and out on the road.

For now I've redone the carbs, and gone from running on 2 cylinders to fireing on all 4, changed the timing belts, resealed the forks and redone the brakes all around. I've also taken off the crash bars and highway pegs and given her some new paint and polished, polished, polished.

Phase 2 is new handlebars and a new or reupholstered seat. Then come winter I will try to untangle the mess of wiring the PO left behind and maybe look at some Shoei hard cases.

Thanks for all your help so far!

Welcome to the 'Wingdom.

Looks great, do you have any pics of the process ?

We love to watch people work, even in the past tense …

Thanks Rat,
Since you asked for it....
Here she is at the start. The PO had done some work probably around 6500km ago. That's based on the new odometer, it passed through a few hands on its way to me so I don't really know any of the history. It was basically running but was showing the effects of sitting for so long. Only 2 cylinders were running, the brakes were dragging and the chrome and aluminum were a bit rusty.

I did all the fluids, changed the timing belts and set the points and valve clearances and then got to work on the carbs

The carbs are from a GL1100 which I being an idiot didn't realize until I had already ordered the Carb kit for a 1000. Fortunately the folks at Randakk's were understanding and I got the right parts sorted out. Mostly the carbs went well except one channel in carb number 3 that took 4 tries to get properly cleaned.
Then once it was running I did all the things to make sure it would steer and stop properly and then made her pretty.

I made a little change to the colours of the accents on the tank and the fenders and went from a straight up black at first to a nice metalic green and black in the current version.
First few weeks in the wild she looked like this:

And as of this weekend she is rocking her new colours:

The plan is for some simple handlebars to replace the window style and then a nice tan seat and grips. If I"m feeling flush I may try for an M-Unit wiring setup this winther.
