New to site
Hi just wanted to introduce myself. Just bought my second Goldwing. First was a 79 that was turned into a bobber .I was going to rebuild it but ended up needing to replace a car so I sold it before I could join the site. It has been 9 years between bikes. Several mooves across the us and finally bought my second. It is an 83 interstate that is now in the process of being converted into a naked bike and eventually a cafe. I will start a build thread once I have enough posts to start my own thread it will be slow moving one as I intend to ride it as much as possible.

Welcome! Change your belts! Keep in mind that soon a nice un-molested Interstate will be more rare and in-demand that a cafe'd out or bob'd one.

Re: New to site
The belts are on the list of things to do. As are the breaks. I have already replaced headgaskets. I sold the bags Trunk framing and fairing to pay for the 3 sets of break pads, complete gasket set and oil seals, air filter, and oil filter. So far only in it $750 USD including the purchase of the bike.

Yeah, I was hoping it just needed a few things rode it home 100 miles and then found out it needed the headgaskets after I started to go through and change fluids. Glad I found out before changing the oil.

Re: New to site
I have been searching the forums but have not had any luck with info on the rats nest of wiring behind the weight. I would appreciate any guidance on that.

Welcome from St Louis. What area do you call home? I just went through some of that wiring mess you refer to and all I can tell you is to take your time and follow the diagrams. I eliminated just enough to be able to tuck the rest under the shelter. May re-visit the mess some time but for now it works.

Re: New to site
I'm in the Harrisburg area. Yeah I figured based off past wiring experience the best thing is to take as much time and not rush it. I was hoping there was a forum that someone posted on how they did it. Eventually I would like to redo all of it with the motogadget mo.unit blue. That will be further down the road after saving up to get all the components to go along with it.

Re: New to site
Welcome from Maine.
The GL1100s make great naked GLs. I've moved two Interstates to standards in the last few years. IIRC, you'll find a nice big "plug" to disconnect the fairing wiring, which is nice. Then I think you'll find little connectors to disconnect the bike side of the plug wires.
Post #39 on my Cabernet build from '21 has a photo of the wiring nest after I pulled the fairing plugs: viewtopic.php?f=30&t=76317&hilit=cabern ... 30#p798873
I don't think I did any snipping, and the remaining wiring got tucked inside the headlight bucket. The wiring poses fewer issues than a Vetter set up, as the Vetter installs often involved scotchloks, cutting, or the like.
I find that pictures are really useful for me, as is a little notebook to document weird/unusual things you don't want to forget or lose track of.
Get a build thread started; we'd like to see those photos.
