Hey folks got recommended from someone over at GL1800 forum. I have a restored 79 Wing that have owned about 2 years. Bet I haven't put 300 miles on it. Just no time and have several other bikes. Anyway it is always hard to start and seems very cold natured. Has dyna ignition. Looking for somewhere to start diagnosing. Here is a link to many pics hope its ok to post

Welcome from Wisconsin. Looks like a well taken care of ride! I'm not terribly familiar with the 1000's, but I'm sure others will be along to give you some things to check.

I like it. Almost bought a similar bike 3 years ago in Saskatoon,Sask. but got there (a 6 hour drive)and the bike was a disaster. Hand made additions, clutch non-functional, battery dead, burned oil when it finally lit etc. etc. If it had looked like your bike it would be in my garage right now. Hope you enjoy your 79. I do. You should fill in your info so we know where you are on this planet.

Welcome! Nicely done restoration. But, I think we need a few more photos so we could get a better idea…

My guess is that if it sits between runs, the carburetor bowls are drying out. Takes a bit of cranking to get that mechanical fuel pump to fill the bowls back up to a point that it’ll light off. I solved it on my 1000 by installing an electric fuel pump from a GL1200. Starts instantly now even after sitting for a couple or three weeks - but it likes the choke.

The cold natured aspect comes with the territory. However, mine warms up to the point that it’s rideable in just a few minutes.

According to the third to last photograph's rebuild laundry list, the Carburetors were rebuilt in 2007.
Have they been serviced since then?

As suggested above, carb issues are a pretty common ailment, especially if the bike doesn't get some steady exercise. Overlooking other common issues, however, can find you chasing your tail.
Ignition/ electrical issues such as weak spark, poor or corroded wiring terminals and grounds, old plug wires, bad resistor caps, etc. can all lead to poor performance.
I would start with a fuel additive (Chevron's Techron is my recommendation) combined with some good long miles and see what comes of it. Checking the timing, trimming back the ends of the plug wires, and cleaning wiring connections and grounds would a good place to start on the electrical...

Thanks for all the replies. First and foremost I did not do the restoration. I purchased bike about two years ago and have not put 300 miles on the bike. It came from Colorado and was running similar when I got it. Having previously lived in CO I know they sometimes advance the timing for the altitude so I have always wondered about that. I have gone to garage five days in a row and bike starts right up but takes a loooonnng time to warm up. Then I stayed away two days and killed battery trying to start again . Only thing I have done is install a new fuel pump

Welcome 64deville.
Your wing looks clean as a whistle. Love the red. If I go 2 weeks without starting and riding my 75 for 15 minutes, I get nervous. Just like Cliff said above, our bikes don’t do well without regular exercise.
But you will get it figured out with the NGW site by your side.
