A funny thing happened...

#1

Post by kerryb »

A funny thing happened on the way home from the motorcycle shop. I put my '83 interstate (now naked) wheels with new tires in the back of the car and went home. When I got there, the wheel bearing (drive side rear) had fallen out of the wheel! I picked it up and set it back in the hub, there was no slop, it dropped right back in, and lifted back out easily with one finger. The bike only has 33k original miles on it. I have heard of '84's having a problem in this area, but not on an '83. Not sure if a new bearing will solve the problem...or even if there is a problem, but I thought bearings were supposed to be an interference fit. Looking for advice on how to proceed. Thanks in advance.

My Valk has the same issue, I picked up some bearing fit retainer to hold it in place. Time will tell if it worked.

So I did some research, and found that 82 and 83 rear wheels share the part number for Flange, Driven, 42615-463-000. Which is the component that holds the bearing that fell out. I have an '82 rear wheel that I could steal that part from, is it that simple? I guess I'll find out after I wrest the rear wheel off the '82. One other question I haven't figured out yet, is there something that presses on the center of the rear bearing, opposite the pressure from the axle spacer between the two bearings?

A little more research answered my own question. There is a spacer in the drive side (#16, final drive) that supports the bearing in place.
I'd love to hear any suggestions or concerns.

I would check the load capacity of besring retaining compounds - should be quite adequate. I have heard of millwrights using the Locktite bearing retaing compounds with good success.

Oops! The bearing is part of the hub! Duh! So I'll be installing a new bearing(s) with locktite #638, and I'll keep an eye on it. Learn something new every day...

I had an issue on my CX650E that had spun a rear wheel bearing in the wheel assembly and you could remove it easily as you noted even with a new replacement bearing. I used a small pin punch and went around the bearing retaining area in the wheel and punched probably 30 small punch marks into the surface. I then used the green colour Loctite bearing retainer and pressed the new bearing into the dimpled surface of the retainer. It required a press fit again, as the 30 punch marks raised the surface enough to cause a friction fit again.

That was 5 years ago and every year I check the rear wheel and nothing has moved in there.
