1971 CB750
I recently got a 1971 CB750 and have been working on it. Got the engine finished, the paint done and I am starting to assemble some of the components.

Re: 1971 CB750
Thanks for your comments but Jay would probably fire me for being too slow . Here are the gauges that I just finished. These were in bad shape when I started. You know how they look after 50 years: dents, rust, cracked faces, etc. After I work all the tiny dents out of the black covers, I put them on my lathe and sand them to bare metal. Then I spread JBWeld on any dents and let it harden. Then I use the lathe again to sand off the residue. I used Jet Black Urethane paint with hardener from The Coating Store. I have found that cutting the chrome ring with a Dremel tool is better than prying it off. It is easy to reattach the ring with JB Weld and you can hardly see the seam if you put it at the bottom.

Re: 1971 CB750
Glad you are riding a CB750 too. These are getting very expensive to fix up, so this is my last one. Just the pipes cost me $2,000.00 and the prices just keep going up. Here are my other two: Both of these were in terrible shape when I started. Most people would have junked both of them, but with a lot of time and money, anything can be fixed .

Nice paint! Is that a stock candy color, and did you do it yourself?? And what/how do you do the cases?

Re: 1971 CB750
The paint on the one I am currently working on is a candy apple red from TheCoatingStore.com and I painted it. I took the engine completely apart and cleaned the cases in an ultrasonic cleaner. I just used the standard silver engine paint that many of us use on the GL1000 engines. Everything was taken apart and fixed/restored on all three of these bikes. A friend, Mike Learn, painted the gold bike and he did a great job. It closely matches the original color. He is a nationally known painter and artist. I painted the copper color bike using the same paint that Mike used but I added more layers to change the color. With candy paint, even one layer will make the paint change colors and that is why it is very difficult to match, it but in this case, I wanted the copper/orange look.

Re: 1971 CB750
That's beautiful; I have a '76 KZ400 I'd like to repaint in an as-yet undecided candy color, but you're right, candies can get tricky especially if you don't have all that much experience. Nice job!

Re: 1971 CB750
I sanded the candy-green tank of a CB500 once and found it was candy blue over a gold base. Hard to reproduce that with a paint code.
