Sounds like a handful. Maybe I was premature in my earlier assessment. Long road ahead. If the SOHC 750 thread spread over 7 years, how long will this one run??

I haven't really put a timeframe on my projects, and going back and doing the math I definitely don't want to. Honestly? I would've clocked the 750 at like 3 or 4. It definitely didn't feel like 7. I know stretching it out helps keep things affordable, so there's that. Or maybe I'm just blacking out and losing time... :lol:

All jokes aside, this one ain't a huge rush. Once I get confirmation it will run (or at least try to), then I'll tear it down, which should go pretty quick. Then it's just a matter of seeing what I need to replace as it starts to go back together. That said, I'd like to avoid a pile of Dream parts lying around BEFORE I get my 1000 back together. That one should go quick once I get the gas tank paint to behave. I feel like all the 1300 needs is dialing in the carbs correctly (quickly done, IF I knew what I was doing....), and while the Valk is getting some stuff done, it's all custom cosmetic stuff, and can be back-burnered easily.

....guys? You think I grabbed one project too many? lolol

On the plus side, after cleaning up a couple electrical connectors, making sure my ground strap was clean and my headlight worked, PROGRESS!

This was a massive improvement over last time I tried this, where I got nothing. Hi-lo beam works, along with the starter button and starter motor.

That said? I'm going to need to clean every single electrical connector. The tail light is either stuck on or off, when it works. The handlebar controls need cleaning very badly, and despite the main switch having 5 positions (3 of operate the starter), all this stuff only works in 1 position.

So, still an uphill climb, but much better than I was expecting.

Re the model year, seems I read once that in those days, the initial digit of a number on a tag on the wiring loom would be the last digit of the year made. If there's a tag. If there's a loom...

Thanks all. I'll keep all this in mind, and see if I can figure out anything once teardown begins in earnest.

Speaking of teardown, due to the rather unpredictable weather and the moment, I'm doing my best to get everything of value off my parts bike and into the garage.

I would've kept going, but to remove the engine it looks like the right case side has to come off, and I figure I'll tackle that in a minute.

One pleasant surprise was the carburetor. I could tell the outside looked rather clean, but I wasn't ready for how nice it looked inside as well. A bit of residue, sure, but compared to the bike it came off of? This thing is pristine.

Never any moisture in it: no gasohol fuel. The right case cover is dry: pull the kickstarter and remove all the screws you see and it slides off.

Ooo, perfect. It sent it to the spam folder for whatever reason, but I dug it out and am current perusing it as we speak. Thank you sir!

I'm currently doing the usual song-and-dance of determining disassembly order of my parts bike by unbolting what I THINK can come off next, then finding out what it hits and I have to take off instead. The rear shock having to come off before the upper chain guard was a surprise... In any case, I'm hoping engine out by tomorrow, but we shall see.

--Condenser electrical-taped to the carb cover screw
--Half the screws on the left case cover missing. (Right cover was no different)

My gramma once told me about 60 years ago that if I was changing a tire and kicked over the hubcap containing the lug nuts and losing them that I could use one from each of the other wheels to get home. Maybe that is what the PO did when he lost the mounting screws from one of the case covers crossy.gif

Hm. I wonder if that would explain the sheet metal screw that replaced one of the header studs too... :shock:

That condenser on the head--bad place to put one, I believe. Sometimes they go bad when they get hot. I missed my first summer of riding with my friends on my 63 Dream because that stupid condenser would die after about 15 minutes, and I had to wait for it to cool. After the first few times, they'd just ride off and leave me... :lol:
