Life changes, GL1000 decisions.

#1

Post by Bugdaddy66 »

Aging parents and younger brother with health issues is cutting into discretionary time for me this past year plus. Because of this my faithful stead of the past 10 years needs to find a new home that can ride it more than I do. My question for the group, do I advertise it dressed or undressed? Both? I can convert it from one to the other in under an hour, but don't want to do that for every looker. Thanks for the input, I have/will miss this forum, still the best on the web!

In most markets it’s probably worth more naked ... on the other hand the plastic is worth nothing off the bike ... tough call ... local market rules ... if I had to guess, I’d say naked ... try $3000.

Don’t go away regardless ...

Depends on if you want to get out of it what it's worth (Naked), or trying to get rid of it sooner rather than later (Dressed). Personally I'd keep it naked to get a bit more money out of it, but if you need the space right away, dressed is the way to go.
1997 Valkyrie- Light Cutomization, but Too Busy Riding
1980 KZ1300- Bike's Haunted
1976 GL1000 (Yellow)- It Runs (Poorly) and Doesn't Leak (Mostly)
1974 Velosolex 3800- Better Than Walking
1972 CB750- Broke the Chain And Ate the Motor
1969 CT90- The Most Fun You Can Have on 90ccs.
1965 CA77 Dream- Needs a Full Teardown, but Complete

All advice I give is only valid until an expert corrects me.

Sorry to hear your selling what looks like a really nice bike. Letting them sit though isn’t a good option either.

You could consider showing it both ways in the for sale ad with the option for the potential purchaser to choose which way they want it. Offering to change it to naked if desired by the purchaser is a bonus that may give you a leg up on others for sale.

The good news is that many bikes have gone way up in value these past few years. The Wings maybe less so, yet they are commanding much better pricing than before Covid.
Current Bikes:

1966 CL77 - Honda 305cc - Dual purpose - "Gentleman's Scrambler" was a period moniker.
1967 CL175K0 - Low production number with #802 engine serial- winter 2019/2020 full restoration.
1972 CB350F - Baby Four with low mileage - Cosmetic refresh to the next level 2021/2022.
1978 CB550K - Very original bike with only 7499 Km. from new - light cleanup and refresh done.
1983 CB1100F - Canadian model - DOHC Supersport in pristine low kilometre condition from new.
1984 GL1200 - Standard model in showroom condition - two owner bike from new.
1984 CX650E - Restored summer 2017 - a rare Eurosport model - excellent one owner bike.

Thanks for the advise! I will pull it out of storage and do the spring things to get it ready for the road. I agree, not using it is hard on both the bike and me. Think I will try it naked in the $2500 range and see what happens. The fairing looks great on the bike, but I continue to fight cracks on the inside cowl area, and it is the first thing you (I) notice when you sit on the bike.

BTW, I am not done riding yet, I just don't have the free time for 3 bikes anymore, so going to just one.

Leave it dressed but show prospective buyers undressed version. After they buy it they can do what they want.

Just me, but unless you know you can use or sell the extra stuff, I'd sell it loaded and let the buyer deal with it. Not a whole lot of call for that kind of thing these days. But maybe you're a better salesman than I am.
