I did a thing . . .

Not a Goldwing and not a Honda, but it is Naked, and a shaft drive! Been bikeless for a few years now, and decided I needed a winter project. I narrowly missed out on a Goldwing, but settled on this instead. 1979 Yamaha XS750SF. I guess you would call it a barn find. Hasn't been registered to ride since 1986. Just over 3000 miles showing on the odometer. Has a clean title, but no keys.

It's a bit of a crap shoot - not sure what I am going to find in the gas tank. Rear wheel doesn't turn - I think the brake is locked up. Engine is not locked up (kickstarter allows me to turn it over). Gonna need all the typcial stuff - tires, battery, brakes, carbs rebuilt, etc. Oh, and if you are looking for an investment opportunity, you may want to buy stock in Simichrome - a lot of chrome and aluminum that needs to be polished. I may call on the collective wisdom of this group along the way.

Not sure what exactly my plan is - if I plan to keep it or clean it up/get it sorted and sell it off. It's 100% there, and is 100% stock at the moment. I am kinda thinking about going with a mild cafe/bobber look, but I am not going to hack the thing up. I may call on the collective wisdom of this group along the way.

I had it's bigger brother (the 1100) as my first bike (I was dumb), but was always intrigued about the triples. They have an awesome sound to them I've liked quite a bit. The biggest complaint I've heard about them was that they were not much different from the twin cylinder 650s, and those were pretty well bulletproof. Yamaha build quality was always something I've been impressed with, and if it's all there I can't imagine bringing it back will be too hard.

It's definitely rare to see any XS with all their factory parts together these days, moreso than most Hondas. They were real popular bikes to cut up for cafes and bobbers because they tended to run a bit cheaper than your average CBs a number of years ago, and never got to be popular enough to have a real good parts availability. You got a good one.
1997 Valkyrie- Light Cutomization, but Too Busy Riding
1980 KZ1300- Bike's Haunted
1976 GL1000 (Yellow)- It Runs (Poorly) and Doesn't Leak (Mostly)
1974 Velosolex 3800- Better Than Walking
1972 CB750- Broke the Chain And Ate the Motor
1969 CT90- The Most Fun You Can Have on 90ccs.
1965 CA77 Dream- Needs a Full Teardown, but Complete

All advice I give is only valid until an expert corrects me.

That looks so nice, you might want to check the Yamaha forums for desirability before making any changes. You might flip it for cash to pay for cafe parts on another one. My friend still mentions regretting selling his to get something else, (which he is also happy with).

Agreed. Just like any other classic bike, there are devoted XS fans out there. Poke around before the mod monkey sets in.

They are only original once and with 3000 miles a rare find for any bike brand these days. I had a Yamaha XS400 Maxim for a short time when I got back into riding again. It was a smaller twin, yet I was quite impressed with the quality and performance for 400cc's.
Current Bikes:

1966 CL77 - Honda 305cc - Dual purpose - "Gentleman's Scrambler" was a period moniker.
1967 CL175K0 - Low production number with #802 engine serial- winter 2019/2020 full restoration.
1972 CB350F - Baby Four with low mileage - Cosmetic refresh to the next level 2021/2022.
1978 CB550K - Very original bike with only 7499 Km. from new - light cleanup and refresh done.
1983 CB1100F - Canadian model - DOHC Supersport in pristine low kilometre condition from new.
1984 GL1200 - Standard model in showroom condition - two owner bike from new.
1984 CX650E - Restored summer 2017 - a rare Eurosport model - excellent one owner bike.

This isn't my first XS750. And it looks better in pictures than it does in real life.

Interestingly, I was able to kick the motor over when I bought it, but now it won't budge. I may just be having a hard time getting to go into neutral - I seem to recall on my previous one that it was pretty fussy about getting into neutral. I hope it's not anything major inside the motor.

With 3000 miles I doubt it.

Sweet grab. Not sure what you paid but if it was low, a flip would be a good option. If not then I say go all in. Polish those covers, put a practical handlebar on it, make it safe and enjoy!

$300. Guy I bought it from deals in cars. He found a Porsche that he wanted that was part of an estate. He had to buy the entire contents of the guy's garage - which included this bike. He isn't a motorcycle guy, and just wanted to off it.
