What is a Naked GoldWing?

What comes to mind when you hear the term "Naked GoldWing" ?
Saddlebags and fairing?
3 wheels?
Sidecars?
Just a windshield?
No luggage?

Not looking to piss anyone off here, so don't instantly become offended by the question.
...Just curious.

Naked, as in "naked as the day you were born" so applying that comment in this respect refers to the bike, as it left the factory, no fairing, no panniers, no third wheel, as it was/is.

Nigel.

I agree. My first GL had a Pacifico Shadow fairing. I did not consider it naked. A bare luggage rack and long bungee is all that's really needed for me.

The way it came from the factory in 75..... which is good for show trophies'. But if you want to ride them in the real world some updates are needed. Everything else is a tribute to the original, but fits the needs of the owner. When the name was changed to NGW it opened the field to the imagination of the owner. New Gold Wing , Nice Gold Wing, etc. All version of the opposing type engine that had it's start in Japa n in 75. The real question is why did they call it "Goldwing". "Naked" could refer to only what is needed to roll down the road. No gauges, fenders, lights, exhaust, etc. Bottom line, it is in the mind of the builder. But I believe you would have to ask the originator of the club what he had in mind.....or fall back on what you have in your mind.

Rhetorical or not, I kinda know the answer to this one. The idea was that the GL1000 was going to be the new flagship model for the company. Maybe not the best at any one thing, but as good as it could be at everything. The "gold" standard, as it were. Match that up with the "wing" in the Honda logo, and there you go.

As far as where the line falls on what I consider "naked"? Saddlebags I'm usually willing to give a pass to. Even rear racks. Windshields are VERY questionable, but depends on the day. Fairings and/or top trunks? No can do.
1997 Valkyrie- Light Cutomization, but Too Busy Riding

1976 GL1000 (Yellow)- It Runs (Poorly) and Doesn't Leak (Mostly)
1974 Velosolex 3800- Better Than Walking
1972 CB750- Broke the Chain And Ate the Motor
1969 CT90- The Most Fun You Can Have on 90ccs.
1965 CA77 Dream- Needs a Full Teardown, but Complete

All advice I give is only valid until an expert corrects me.

:crosso Yep I hear you Lucien. My 78 has a tailbag that I strap on when I need to carry some stuff like a rain suit etc. but so far have resisted on the WS/racks/trunks/saddlebags etc. I feel like the youngster I was when I first bought my new 79 1000 when I ride her. I am 75Yo but feel like I lose 42 of those years when I go out for a putt. That being said I also have a Valkyrie Tourer to haul freight when needed! But I have to admit I feel so much better riding Trickster :-D

Uh oh. Here I am picking on engine guards and I forgot about the Viper fairing on my 78. Guess that means I'm not naked!

For this site, 75-84 were the years Goldwings were offered as naked bikes, hence all 75-84 models are referred to as naked even they may don modest attire.

It has been brought up that Valkyries also were offered Naked and should be included, but despite using almost the same Goldwing engine, it didn’t carry the Goldwing name.
Whatever I suggest here should be given ample time for a moderator to delicately correct. I apologize in advance.

I always thought it just meant a GoldWing without a fairing.

All I know for sure is that when I joined the forum I posted pics of Mr.H with the bags, rack, crashbars and a windshield and was welcomed warmly. And when I added the sidecar I don't remember anyone suggesting it didn't fit this forum.

Heck, there have even been a few threads about repairing fairings on here over the years...
