Riding habits

I was reading an article on goldwing docs. A fella had trouble with clutch slipping at 7 or 8 thousand rpms riding his gl1000. Important to remember that we shouldn’t use oil with friction modifiers.
But another question is who runs their old wings at 7-8 thousand rpms? Maybe everyone but me?
Got me wondering?

Yes, I wonder how long any clutch or drive train will handle that. Also what does he do with 4th and 5th? I hit 6500 occasionally, and although I've heard that it is designed for high RPM (at least, the earliest years), can't force myself higher. CB750, yes. Just feels different at the higher RPMs. Isn't he the one with '75 engine and '79 carbs? I'm surprised it is still pulling enough to slip the clutch at those RPMs and the smaller carbs.

My red line could be painted in at 6000 and I’d never hit it ....

For whatever reason, I am nicer to the motor in my GL1000 than any of them. I do occasionally run it up to 7K, but very briefly and perhaps once every third time I ride it. Usually I just putt around on it, but with occasional bursts.

I run in the 5000 to 6000 range pretty regular, but that has more to do with 80 MPH speed limit here than just hot rodding the bike. Can't imagine why you would need to run above 7000, but to each his own.

I will occasionally run through the gears pretty hard, but 6k is about tops for me. When I'm running on the interstate @75-80 MPH, it takes some getting used to after chugging along in my big diesel truck that seems to be wailing at 2500 RPM, lol!
That said, my 1100 will eat up the miles all day at 5500 RPM.

Saw that Goldwing docs too. I (an old fart in my mid 70's) do like to let my 78 stretch her legs every once in a while as well. But I do it very occasionally just to reassure myself that we both have still got it!! I did wonder about the OP's clutch still having enough jam at 7-8000 RPM to slip when it didn't in where I thought the power range would be. Maybe his bike has something else going on rather than friction additives in the oil.

Very possible because I used to use Ams Oil in my 83 interstate and the clutch would slip a bit when riding 2 up and fully loaded for a road trip. I later on switched to Rotella T4 and it then slipped like crazy 2 up or solo and keep in mind both oils are JASO MA certified so out came the clutch, I sandblasted all the steel plates to give them some etch and installed new clutch springs. The clutch doesn't slip at all now

I don't let it sit there but yes I hit the redline quite often when going through the gears. 1st to second for sure. 2nd to 3rd sometimes, 3rd to 4th the rpm climb is slow enough that I can feel the power fall off just before redline and I shift there

I'm sure I come close to that when accelerating hard from a stop into a break in traffic but when I'm doing that I'm too busy to look at the tach. Otherwise probably virtually never.

I do remember figuring out that my original GL1000 would do 100 Km/h in 2nd gear without hitting the redline, though but I only did it once to try.....
