What bike do you commute with?
Hey all,
My wife and I have worked together for many years, and I would say 98% of the time have been able to commute/carpool together.
Next week she starts a new job, and has different hours. So, I will be riding a bit more again. This makes me think about what everyone else uses as a daily commuter?
I won’t get another bike for a few years that is meant just for commuting, but always good to look at options!

Re: What bike do you commute with?
I don't really commute these days (unless you count driving to the post office a few times per week to pick up the mail) but before I retired I drove a bike to work every day year round.
If you are going to commute by motorcycle in winter you pretty much need a sidecar, if only so you don't fall over on slippery roads. For the last 14 years my winter bike has been a CX650E based sidecar outfit (that has been gradually turning into a GL500 - you can read its history here). Over the years (mostly before the CX) I learned what the bike needed to become suitable for winter and what to wear so I didn't freeze to death. I can elaborate if you are interested.
I traditionally had a 2 wheeled bike for the warm half of the year, the last of which was my '83 GoldWing with '77 engine, at least for the first dozen years after I put it together from my wrecked GL1000 and an 1100 that sat for a decade (mostly outside).
Then they closed a road that was part of my 2 wheeled (on pavement) route to work for most of a summer (rebuilding a couple of bridges) and when I had to take the 'Wing on some of the dirt/gravel roads I previously only used on 3 wheels I realized that the scenery there was much nicer in summer (& better than on the paved roads) so I got a second sidecar for the 'Wing.
I should mention that when I started commuting on bikes we lived in a suburb of Toronto but a couple of years later we moved to a small town and I got a job close to home (initially a 5 minute drive but then we moved farther away and it became a 25 minute trip).

Re: What bike do you commute with?
I have been commuting on my 1100 Interstate. 75 miles, round trip, 70% highway/ rural. I also lug around a fair amount of paraphernalia, and ride in all weather except snow/ storms. I've run smaller bikes previously and prefer the 'presence' of a larger bike in traffic.

Re: What bike do you commute with?
Yes, should have said non snow months commuting. I do have the sidecar, but do not plan on riding that one to work much.
I am certainly debating the smaller bike vs bigger bike idea. I commuted with my 1800 the first few years, and always loved it, but questioned if something different would work better.
My ride is about 85 miles round trip.

Re: What bike do you commute with?
I contemplated getting something smaller for commuting but ruled it out because 1) Any bike I own has to earn its keep and if I didn't drive the 'Wing to work every day I wouldn't use it enough to justify keeping it and 2) I liked being able to pick up the family's groceries on the way home from work instead of having to make a separate trip for that.

Re: What bike do you commute with?
Mine is the 1200 Interstate. It has the bags for carrying all my stuff and plenty of power to go anywhere and still get about 40 mpg.

Re: What bike do you commute with?
@85 miles round trip, I wouldn't want anything smaller than a 750. Of course, I've not had any experience with newer bikes...

Re: What bike do you commute with?
My main commuter was my 1200 Standard. Just the right compromise between a larger size and heft that made daily riding comfortable, but not so big as to be a pain in the butt to drag out of the garage at 4 in the morning.
(I do say "was", because I've been scaling back riding it during my current attempt to sell it. The market has not been helpful in this regard.)

Re: What bike do you commute with?
I have commuted on this thing for years. The only, and I mean only reason that I will do that is because I have covered parking. I would not leave a motorcycle I care about out in the sun, uncovered day in and day out.
I will also say that when the temperature gets above 95 or 100F, my two-wheeled commuting stops. Bob is pretty hardcore in his all weather riding, I am a wimp. I ride for fun. Riding in this infernal heat in Southern Arizona Is. Not. Fun.
I am on my work phone and don't have a lot of photographs, obviously I no longer run the Webers on this thing, but it has been my go-to ride for over five years now!

Re: What bike do you commute with?
To work and back is only 20 miles, or so. And I don't need to carry any more than can easily fit in a back-pack.
My XL600R was my first choice for anything that didn't require more cargo capacity....until the rod knock started...like I was told it probably would...
The FT500 Ascot is an absolute blast to ride, and is now my 'running around bike'. I just need to finish the seat. I put it together 'temporary' to see what more was needed....several years ago.
The sidecar rig gets more use than the FT, though...that extra space is handy. We got a new(to us) dog last fall, after we had to put Deacon to sleep after a long, happy run. He took to riding in the sidecar right away, and loves it. He is a 6 year old American Bulldog, and 90+ pounds of the sweetest dog who goes all over the place with me.
If it is too cold, too hot, too windy, too rainy, or I am too lazy, I take my 09 Subaru Forester.
