Dumbest thing in a long time
It has been a while since I had anything useful to add but here is something worth adding. Last night I was spray painting a basket for a project in the garage and forgot the large can of rustoleum spray near the heater duct and got distracted with a phone call. When I realized it, the can was almost too hot to pick up. I carefully moved it away to cool. It promptly fell off the saw horse and exploded . the bottom blew out and the rest of the can went between my legs and completely thru the wood garage overhead door. Not a scratch on me . but the boom brought my wife from inside the house in a panic. It is a real thing when the can says to protect it from heat and under 120 deg. Lots of grey over spray on the Bike and everywhere to clean up and a new respect for pressurized paint can. Oh baby could have been so much worse! Got so very lucky on this one

Re: Dumbest thing in a long time
Paint cans are small bombs when used or stored improperly and you Mr, salukispeed are a very lucky fellow.
I had a neighbor about a block away who deliberately did something similar to burn his house down for the insurance. He covered the top surface of a gas space heater with spray paint cans and left. At least one blew up and started a fire but someone passing nearby saw or heard it and called the fire department, who conveniently arrived before the rest went up in flames. They took a look through window, saw the cans and cut off the gas supply. Prison time for the idiot and his brother in law who assisted him, no insurance payout and the house was torn down due to structural damage, it was a wreck anyway.

Re: Dumbest thing in a long time
I am very lucky as was stated for sure. and wanted to share my story with the friends here that they might avoid such a thing. There are many here that likely put Spray cans in warm-hot water to get them to spray better and in colder temps. so I even brought the can and pics to work for the next safety meeting. Could have gone so very wrong. The garage was already warm and the can did not need warming. Just a dumb move!!

Re: Dumbest thing in a long time
glad it wasn't worse.
I was told a story many many years ago about a guy that had an oxy acetylene torch in his basement. His wife was standing at the kitchen sink, hear a clunk then a extremely loud bang coming from the basement. Before she could go look, the acetylene tank came up through the lawn about 20 feet from the house in front of the kitchen window.
It might be an urban legend but it sure taught me to respect pressurized vessels.

Yikes, I'm one of those guys that warms up cans of paint in warm water. One time I noticed that the bottom of one can had deformed and swelled. I guess that I was closer to disaster than I thought....

Re: Dumbest thing in a long time
I've used warm water for improve painting with spray cans for years. There is little risk if done properly. Sort of like working on motorcycles. All tools, especially power tools carry some risk.

Re: Dumbest thing in a long time
Common subject here in Mx. People store the cans in makeshift metal cabinets, the sun hits the side of the cabinet where a convenient can o paint or solvent is right next to it and sorprise.....
Glad you're ok, stay safe.

Re: Dumbest thing in a long time
Years ago I had something similar happen when I left a butane BBQ lighter on the side of a grill after it had been lit. Scared the heck out of me. No more beer while the grill is in use

Re: Dumbest thing in a long time
A long time ago when I was volunteer fireman, we responded to a fire at an auto body repair shop and were greeted with exploding cans of paint and other chemicals. Glad it was a once in a lifetime experience.
