Road rash Rant!*!!!!

#1

Post by 77Gowing »

Well, I'm no longer a virgin rider now.
Took a spill just five feet off my driveway.
I forgot to look in the direction of my right turn
And almost hit the alley fence, when I did turn hard I was on a little gravel on the alley and down I went on my right side. I was on my Indian scout what a poor way to start a ride huh?. Right arm/leg looks bad but I'm laughing at my stupidity. Doesn't hurt at all cept my pride. Road rashed my tan saddle bag on the RT side, smashed the right mirror and snapped the rear brake toe lever.
The bags cost 1k a set...now that's what hurts.

Me thinks I should ride a lot more than I have been. I'm still a novice and am timid about riding. Solution....more practice. I've no excuse I live in West Texas where a guy can pretty much ride year round. San Angelo gets 300 days a year of sunshine.
Any of you northern folks want to shame me for being a pansy rider, I'll understand. I'm just glad I didn't drop my wing thus far.

Safe riding to y'all, keep me with your fingers crossed I don't do anything else quite so dumb.

Rant over and out.

Ouch! Glad you're ok, though.

That's a fantastic attitude! After I hit the deer on Athena, I went back and rode the same road at the same time of day. And altered my riding style to match the conditions!

Practice makes perfect.

And next time, ATGATT!!

Edit. This is where I crashed and how far I slid. My bike is parked where Athena first hit the ground (so I hit the deer like 20 feet before that). I slid to the 100 ft mark (its actually supposed to be where the white road markers are, not where I circled), the bike to the 160 ft mark. The perspective is all weird.

Thanks 0660.

Tomorrow, I'm going to sweep all that fine gravel away from my driveway. And yes to ATGATT. Then I'm getting back on that pony and try again. This time on my wing, my fave.

Hey Ken!

Sorry to hear of your mishap. Glad to hear it wasn't worse. Being that you are no longer living here in the Mitten, but rather in the S.W., I would strongly endorse mesh riding gear. It really does do a good job of keeping you cool when it's warm, and my guess is with a liner installed would be sufficient for any cool weather you are likely to encounter (at least weather when you will be likely to ride).

I assume that your insurance will cover the cost of the repairs to the Scout (less your deductible at any rate).

Hey Chris, yes it will after a FAT deductable.
This was a good lesson for me to make sure my head is in the game before I start a ride.

A lot of motorcycle courses focus on low speed maneuvers .... too much I’ve always thought .... big idea on low speed stuff is stay away from the front brake .... not that I haven’t been there ....

Thanks guys for the good wishes.
During my accident I was modulating the clutch and never touched the brakes.
I was not in a tight turn either. But that little bit of gravel was like being on ice.
I did have the good sense not to be wearing my NGW gear, so the clubs name has not been sullied. Lol

I know it's not nice that the scout got damaged a bit but the important thing is that Kenny is OK.

Glad your ok. It’s been over a year since I was laying on the ground with my bike laying on its side, still running. It’s a reminder that we need to block out all distractions and give 100 percent concentration
every time we ride our bikes. That’s why I like to ride. To block out most everything. Only I’m still not that good at it after all these years. Thanks for sharing your story, it’s a good reminder.
