With only 3400 total produced and 2000 being shipped to the US, advertising a very limited production run would have been costly Vs the length of time (very short production run) and number produced. Remember, no social media, internet, etc. Would have had to print brochures, etc...
I was replacing (insurance) a stolen "Sulphur", walked into the local Honda shop and there it was. I asked...I bought.
The LTD was the first of ANY limited editions offered on any of their numerous models.
They call me "Dog Boy"

Can't blame the "PO"

According to my book
So all the fancy, shiny stuff was only worth just over $300.

In 1976 dollars. looking at the base price and multiply by the increase to today's 'wing and that makes the difference in today's Honda dollars ~$3000.

I think you are over stating it a bit.

I have VIN Number GL1-2036709 that I am just now starting the tear down process. Looking forward to getting her back to a presentable condition. Mine has all the Chrome bits in place. Only thing so far I know that was changed was the seat. I also have a full set of very nice Vetter Bags and Trunk along with an excellent condition Fairing. Not thinking I am going to be putting the Bags and Trunk back on. Fun project!!!

LTD was the top of the line with most every option a standard inclusion. 2018 Tour DCT ABS with what I would consider needed (performance and comfort, not gegaws) options would be ~ $29000 MSRP (including destination charge). Makes it ~ x10 the 1976 LTD price (I've seen Cycle World state them as high as $31k). Both would be negotiated, but still.... BTW, I'd love a new 2018 or maybe the 2019, but the wife likes the '06 and it only has 113k miles on it, so I have about five more years to watch the prices soar. Then, maybe a low mileage '08 - '10 ABS?
