Re: What's the big deal about the "LTD"s?
that is new to me, but what do I know, I am newbie when it comes to wings... The things that cannot be faked on a LTD is the VIN, engine # and the carbs. You could buy the emblems in the past, you could chrome parts... and I bet you could even buy the "gold" rims.

Re: What's the big deal about the "LTD"s?
When I purchased mine, years ago, from the original owner, I called Honda to inquire as to what was still available for the LTD. I was told that everything except the speedo was available. They stated that they would actually go to the parts bin, and put the item in their hand before taking the order. They were smart enough to not rely on the computers! The top shelter was around $275, so they had a good knowledge of the worth. Wish I had bought up a lot of extras back then...I coulda' help a lot of people! I have owned mine twice, through the years! When I purchased, it was pristine, and looked showroom, with full Vetter dress. I undressed it, serviced everything out because it had been sitting for a few years, and rode it periodically. A close friend hounded me, over a period of months, to sell it to him. I sold it to him for exactly, to the penny, of what I had in it! I keep folders and receipts! Two months later, he sold at a handsome profit! It became available some few years later, and I repurchased it. Not in quite so gooda shape, this time. Clean and nice, but not the perfect LTD that I had owned at one time! And so it goes!

Re: What's the big deal about the "LTD"s?
every year during the 1000 series Honda changed the carbs. the LTD carbs are unique to only the LTD. As far as jetting or the like I don't have the stats.

The carbs on a '76 LTD are code #763A. The carbs on a standard '76 are code #758A. Those numbers are stamped on the carbs.Sugs wrote:What is unique about the carbs?
Here's some much more detailed info about GL1000 carbs and their specs on Randakk's Cycle Shakk web site:

Way down toward the bottom of the page there is a spec chart showing the jets sizes in each model carb.

I guess it's the formatting or whatever but Randakk's pages are not very cell phone friendly. Unbelievably useful information. Just wish I could access it, completely, via phone.

Re: What's the big deal about the "LTD"s?
Different stamping #'s but no changes documented.
That's interesting.
No actual documentation on the balancing and blueprinting either.
without proof, I'm led to believe that the differences on the LTD's are all cosmetic.

Re: What's the big deal about the "LTD"s?
Moons ago, one of our "super members" "Placerville" sent me a (I believe it was) Cycle World magazine from 76, showcasing the LTD.dontwantapickle wrote:Different stamping #'s but no changes documented.

I sent it on to "Polka Dot" (Ernie) which he included in the sale of his LTD.
The author describes the entire bike, including a statement regarding the engine being factory blueprinted. No actual documentation but it was also mentioned to me by the sales staff when I purchased mine on July 3rd, 1976...(fake news?)...

Re: What's the big deal about the "LTD"s?
Maybe, but it's near impossible to fake a real LTD. The frame and engine numbers are in sequence and documented. Along with the final drive and carbs. What more does one actually want?dontwantapickle wrote:Different stamping #'s but no changes documented.

I don't know why anyone would want to build a fake one, I wouldn't. But, to each their own.robin1731 wrote: Maybe, but it's near impossible to fake a real LTD. The frame and engine numbers are in sequence and documented. Along with the final drive and carbs. What more does one actually want?

Actual, factual, documented description of the differences between LTD's and standards would be great.
Does't it seem a bit off that mother Honda would build this special GL engine and then not tell anyone?
Since it all comes down to marketing, you think that they would have shouted it from the rooftops.
Or at least included it in their advertising.
