Rough Week

#1

Post by lcallison »

Went for a ride Thursday afternoon, but it didn't last long. About 2 pm a deer ran across the road and took out my 99 Wing. I haven't looked close, but from what my wife and brother have said, insurance will probably total it. So much for going darkside. I got 5 broken ribs, a lacerated spleen, and lots of road rash, mostly on my arms. I will probably sell my 79 and my 84, and all the parts I have stored up. That makes 17 bones broken and that's too many.

Sorry to hear about that. And hope you have a speedy recovery. It's part of the risk we all take when we throw our leg over an iron horse. Give yourself time to heal before you throw in the towel. I have been where you are. And have the pins and plates to prove it. It made me a more careful rider,......and it will you too

So sorry to hear about your incident, Larry.
Glad that it's YOU, telling us about it, rather than a family member. Hope you heal quickly and completely.

Have only had one encounter with a deer and I was piloting an 88 Ford van. Can't imagine a collision while on a bike.

Thanks y'all. I probably won't completely throw in the towel. I've been riding almost 55 years. It would feel strange not to have at least 1 bike around. I know my wife would love for me to quit, but I probably won't totally.

Parents have a friend that has totaled 2 1800 wings on deer collisions in the last few years. Every year as deer hunting season starts in NY he contacts them to see if they need more bullets!!!

No fun for sure. Knock on wood so far my worst animal encounter (strike) was a woodchuck. It was a miracle I kept the bike upright, I can not imagine hitting a deer.

Good thoughts for your recovery.

Very sorry to hear you got banged up..
Being a new rider at a more "mature" age I have decided that riding at night isn't something I'm comfortable doing.
That seems to be when most deer. motor vehicle collisions occur around here.
After I went down last summer I stood in my garage looking at my bike, helmet and decided..no..this isn't something I want to do and convinced myself to sell all the bikes.
After a few days I changed my mind and decided that an accident wasn't going to win.
I am a lot more cautious then I was coming into corners and I'm still learning but I still love to ride..

That’s awful Larry, probably ten deer accidents w cars within a couple of miles of my house a year.
Almost all with cars I’m sure. When we ride, one of my friends only likes the interstates (freeways) because he believes less deer than back roads. But I like to ride the backroads. So what do you do? Do the best we can to avoid them I guess. Unfortunately they can jump right into your lap from ten feet beside road out of the brush. Absolutely no way to avoid that kind of accident. Sorry to hear about your wreck. Get well soon.
