Testing the waters . . . 1978 for sale?

#1

Post by delling3 »

So, as I said, I am testing the waters here. As much as I hate to even think about it, I am giving serious consideration to selling my '78.

I am really happy with the bike, problem is I never find time to ride it. I am putting in a lot of hours at work, and that isn't likely to change anytime soon. I have at least 10 years 'til retirement. My riding buddy has pretty much given up the game, and my wife won't consider riding with me. So, the bike sits far too much.

My thoughts are that if I sell the scoot, I can roll the $$ over into a hobby car - a convertible to drive on sunny days and weekends - which my wife will actually be willing to ride in.

A lot of you guys have seen my bike (BOTM in June last year) - and I would be holding out for good money to part with it. I am thinking at listing at $4200, and see where it goes. Thoughts? Am I crazy for doing this?

Never saw your bike.

But at $4200, that's every dollar in the world.

Good luck.

I know $4200 is strong money - figure better to start high and work down, as opposed to the other way around.

42 is strong money, but you have a strong bike.

You will need to find that guy that wants one all done, with a good size wallet...….simple right?

A small group of us put a low number 75 back together and got 4K for it awhile back, so it is possible.

I would not sell it for the reasons you mentioned. Get car some other way. The day after the bike is gone,...and the money spent,....you will regret it. Trust me...… been there done that

FWIW, when I look at your bike I think $3000. Paint is gorgeous, bike's all done. If it were a 75 in the same condition I'd think $4500. I agree with Cyborg. Keep it, it's not going to depreciate if it sits awhile and you won't be able to replace it for the money you get out of it.

Thanks for the replies everyone. After mulling it over some, I have decided to go ahead and list the bike for sale. I was run off the road a few years back by a guy on a cell phone who crossed the double yellow. My bike at the time was totaled. I have since had two bikes (including my current Goldwing), but I am still not over the crash. I have ridden many miles since then, but I just am not enjoying it like I used to, and I am not sure I ever will. We'll see what happens.

It is a hard personal choice. Brother got in a wreck a couple years ago (young person on a cell phone hit him) and he has not enjoyed riding since. He does ride but just enough to keep the bike running good. I am sure a sale is in his future.

If you are not comfortable and the passion is gone then yes I would try to turn it toward something in life that does drive you.

Sorry to hear this delling, but I understand. Took me a long time to get comfortable again after totalling my Honda 919 several years ago, but I was at fault and I learned from that mistake. If someone else had caused the crash I might have felt as you do.

Getting run off the road and losing your passion for riding changes things a bit. Good luck with your sale. What kind of convertible are you going to get?

Well, first gotta sell the bike, so may not happen. But thinking along the lines of a late ‘90’s or early 2000’s Mustang, or similar.
