tires again Sorry

Post by salukispeed »

I have Dunlop K491 elite 2's on my 84 interstate and am pleased but it is time . These are no longer available. I will probably stick with the Bridgestone brand. I see that the D 404 look very similar and are available for my Bike MT90 16 and MV85 15. Any other suggestions here on replacements I saw something about Elite 3's

I really like the elite 2's as well, but your current tires must have some serious age as they seemed to have disappeared some years ago. I think the real question is how many miles per year are you putting on them? If it is a lot of miles go with tires (usually more$$) with better wear. I know the Dunlop 402 will fit the front

You are right and This set is quite old for sure. I found a set and bought them a couple years ago ( I pretended that age is not so important ) I probably do not want to look at the Manufacture date. and they are now worn out so I am on the quest for new shoes for the old horse

I used to do the same thing, and forgot how much my 78 sat while I was in residency and then had a daily rider Harley... had been to Sturgis and back on the 78 and discovered a crack that ran all the way around the tire... turned out it was 16 plus years old... made me a believer! I now put 404's on my wings because even with cheaper tires they age out before wear out

I think we've all heard horror stories about "old" tires. And, for sure, it's probably prudent to err on the side of caution. But does that mean always? Here in Arizona, I've seen tires as "new" as four years old with significant drying and sidewall cracking in evidence. But, those are tires that have seen pretty much constant exposure to the intense sun and UV radiation we have here. By the same token, I've also seen fifteen year old tires that have spent essentially their entire lives in a garage with smooth sidewalls and soft tread.

So, if there's no sign of rubber deterioration and/or hardening, what exactly is the catastrophe about to befall the hapless rider?

you are right about the constant sun, heat and UV exposure causing premature aging.... I see it in the faces of some of my patients

Tires grip by flowing around the irregularities in the pavement. As rubber ages it looses the ability to flow, particularly if it is cold or wet. The rubber might look OK and feel good to your hands but still not be able to grip....

No argument from me on the science and properties of fresh rubber. "Cold" and/or "wet" are not conditions normally associated with southern Arizona, however. I only mention this because my recent CBX purchase has 12 year old tires with nubs still on the tread. The rubber looks and feels new. I suppose I'll pick up some fresh rubber in the fall, but for the very few remaining rides this Spring before the heat comes on, I'll not going to stress over it.

One year on my Avon Venom 160/60/16 and the tread looks great, but I’ve got a bunch of weather cracks. It was born in 2013. Stored inside. Pretty disappointed.
