pulled the primary cover... Clymer shows a "tool" to hold everything in place while you remove the bolt (I used an 8 inch piece of plate steel which was as fancy as the "tool" LOTS of persuasion and the rotor is exposed. I was able to pull that sprocket off without removing the clutch etc.

now to pull the rotor.... I can get it nearly off, but it seems to hang up on the primary case lip along the bottom and front. I thought I read on an HD forum that people have "shaved" a little off the lip with a dremel tool.... sort of sounds crazy but.... any thoughts?

If that's all there is between pulling the rotor and having to pull the cover I'd "shave" it. But use extreme caution to keep any and all debris from getting inside the engine.

I am thinking that when it is assembled the stator and rotor are already attached to the engine and the case is then put on. the oil for the primary and clutch are separate from the oil for the engine

Give that rotor a good yank, remember, you're pulling against a very strong magnet. I've never had to grind for any clearance, but I guess it's possible. I've had a couple that I thought that they were being held on by something and it turned out to be just the magnetic force. I never tried to remove the sprocket without taking the clutch hub off, but it might be a little difficult to re install.
...........just took a look at the FSM that I have and it says "It is not necessary to remove the inner primary chaincase to remove the alternator" As always, your results may vary.

I recall one of our honorable & venerable members telling me that if it's hard to do than you are probably doing it wrong.
In my case he was absolutely correct. Perhaps this is true in your case as well. For what it's worth, I'm on your side and am rooting for you! :-D

it is indeed a strong magnet. Per clymers recommendations I am using a gear puller (that smaller out side ring has spring steel and is a dampner). I can get it to the lip and no further. There is no leeway as it must come out straight off the main drive

when this is all done I will do multiple flushes of cheap rotella in the primary case (as I mentioned its oil is separate from the engine-and the transmission has it's own oil) thankfully it is cast aluminum or it would be all over the rotor now

Is this on your 2017 Road King. My shop manual is a couple years old, maybe that's why it's different. I guess the warranty already expired?

no this is Beth's Heritage softail.... my guess is that as the engines grew they did not change the casing. It also has an interesting "compensator" must likely to deal with the vibration of a v-twin. Hers is a twin came 96

here the rotor is finally out... you really cannot really just grab it to pull it

or just stubborn.... but the last time I paid a shop they fubared something not even related to the job!

Everything got cleaned up... did you know the new "paint thinner" is a milky thing    I put it all back with the old primary gasket... in went the oil I took out (less than a year old).... well the gasket leaked, but fired it up to run a bit and then drain out the oil.... despite all my cleaning has a metallic "glow" I will do this a few more times and then replace the gasket

The manual that I have is for an 05 Soft tail. I guess they made some changes to the rotor, I know that I pulled one without grinding the chain case.

So you like that compensator? Someday when you have some extra time, Google Harley compensator, there's lots of threads about that.....might even be more than "oil".
