so there I was..

getting "she who must be obeyed's" bike out of winter storage and this happened.

Image

I had to slide the read end over to line up with the door and over she went. I caught it but not before the fender hit a spare outdrive for my boat.
So after taking a side panel to the city and getting it scanned so they could match the colour and load a spray bomb for me..I got to work.

I sanded the scratch out with 220 grit, feather edging it out..then hit the whole fender with 1000 grit to scuff up the surface.
I washed it down and hit it with 5 coats of the blue.
It has a bit of orange peel which surprisingly you can't see in the sun. I'm undecided if I will hit it with clear and attempt to wet sand it or just leave it alone.

For a guy that hates body work, has no idea what he's doing..and a spray bomb..I'm pretty pumped at how it turned out.

If it were me, I'd smooth it a bit...(but that's just one opinion).

I'm not in the dog house..and she made me supper..so "I think" I'm good.
I discovered a light spot after I pulled the masking tape off (of course) and if I don't fix it..it will drive me nuts.
My question for any of you folks that actually know how to paint..
Can I remask it tomorrow after it sits all night and spray another coat..and will it adhere?
If I do decide to clear coat it..I've been told to wet sand the base coat with 2000 grit first.
I've seen that done on tv..but they never show what is done after the wet sand.
Do you wash it down and spray the clear right over the sanded paint?

Can someone reading this thread speak to the spray bomb. Is it possible to get custom color put in a spray can. And Who does this. I suspect it could be off a bit in color but technology on matching paint is pretty good today

I had mine made at C-Max which is the NAPA paint specialist. My normal NAPA store can load spray bombs but he doesn't have the camera to scan paint colours which I needed done.
So to answer your question..yes you can get custom colours loaded in spray bombs.

Stupid question, but what's a spray bomb? Is it like a custom aerosol?

Hey Bro, I think you did a great job, but I think you should sand and clear-coat.

Many paints are different, some say clear-coat within one hour or after a week. Check that paint company's wesite, it should say.

Spray bomb is a "rattle-can," shake it and spray it out.

I'm going to leave it alone..I know when I'm in over my head.
I'm going to stop by a friends business sometime this summer and get him to do his magic with his cutting and polishing. If I had painted all the body panels I would consider that but I didn't and I can't have the fender looking better then the rest. lol

Maybe if you go over it with some rubbing compound it won't need clear.

If you do decide to clear don't use 2000 grit it's too fine. Use 1000 and a light wet sanding to knock down the orange peel and then use the premade SprayMax 1K clear coat spray can from Napa. Then wet sand from 1000 up to 2000 grit and have your buddy buff it out and it will look amazing.
I do all my own painting now and just like you didn't have a good idea how to do it initially, with time and jobs done it gets easier. The new paints and the variety of custom made spray cans available can turn anyone into a decent hobby painter.

Talk to Napa on recoat times, as you may need to leave it for up to 7 days if a lacquer based finish before a recoat after 1 hour from the initial spray time.
Current Bikes:

1972 CB350F - Baby Four with low mileage - Cosmetic refresh to the next level 2021/2022.
1978 CB550K - Very original bike with only 7499 Km. from new - light cleanup and refresh done.
1983 CB1100F - Canadian model - DOHC Supersport in pristine low kilometre condition from new.
1984 GL1200 - Standard model in showroom condition - two owner bike from new.
1984 CX650E - Restored summer 2017 - a rare Eurosport model - excellent one owner bike.
