Well, OK. Bottom line is that I want to do this one right. It might be custom, but nothing has been hacked and it's remarkably unmolested. The harness is pristine.

So, this won't be a quick project and I won't provide every excruciating detail, but since my activity will slow down during Summer garage heat in a month or so, I might as well add an installment of current activities.

1) Carb kits and carb to manifold isolators on order from Randakk. Mike Nixon's CBX carb book on the way. (Not looking forward to operating on this rack).
2) Petcock leaking like a sieve. Rebuild kit on the way. However, I will probably end up going with a Pingle.
3) Replaced gauge pod bezel and broken cluster back. Old guy dropped it in the garage (said he) and did some damage to the pod and a cam end cover.
4) Will soon be doing swingarm bushings. Factory used PLASTIC! Need to do some detailing back there anyway.
5) The ignitors have puked their potting material. (Common). At first I didn't know what it was until I read some more. Pulled the battery box to address this. Let me tell you that was a PIA. Think of pulling a GL fuel tank and you'll get the general idea.

Here are a few pics that provide a peek in the operating room:

...and this little puddle of hardened goo was the reason I pulled the box. The ignitors reside on the underside of the box and had offloaded some of their encapsulant. As it turned out, there was still plenty left - none of the components were exposed, but I filled them back up with epoxy.

Wotta a pain for nearly nothing. I did take the opportunity to tidy up under there - including removing the caliper stay and refinishing it. A much easier job with that box out.
Turns out to be a pretty common occurance.

Brakes, Carbs, Chain on deck. Order of operations undecided. I'd like to make some decent progress before I go into Summer hibernation.

I'll never complain about pulling a carb rack from a GL again. Never. This one was no picnic.

As many times as I have to go through carbs before they finally (don't) work-

Well, there's a reason I don't own a CBX.

Still, the "behind the scenes" is fantastic.
1997 Valkyrie- Light Cutomization, but Too Busy Riding
1980 KZ1300- Bike's Haunted
1976 GL1000 (Yellow)- It Runs (Poorly) and Doesn't Leak (Mostly)
1974 Velosolex 3800- Better Than Walking
1972 CB750- Broke the Chain And Ate the Motor
1969 CT90- The Most Fun You Can Have on 90ccs.
1965 CA77 Dream- Needs a Full Teardown, but Complete

All advice I give is only valid until an expert corrects me.

Lemme tell you that "V" shape of the carb rack you see above really makes getting them off an adventure. I wimped out and cut the rubbers. Only because I have fresh ones to go on. I believe if I had needed to salvage the old ones, I'd still be cussing.

I will say, that's the one things I'm REALLY glad about my KZ1300. The airbox on mine is about 5 different pieces, one of which removes with two screws and out the side. After that there's plenty of room to shift the carb rack back off the engine, then off to the side as well. Five minutes, done.

Not to say it's a perfect bike, by a long shot. But I'll take what I can get.

I went all out on these carbs. Randakk's master kits. But, to tell you the truth, they were very clean. Just a little leftover varnish in the bowls. Otherwise, the only good thing about the rebuild is that now there's new Viton rubber. (The old stuff was pretty hard and dried out).

...but I'm pretty irritated right about now. Doing the last minute leakage sanity check...I have leakage. Looks like two or three of the bowl drains are weeping. I probably should have left them untouched! Retightened and monitoring. There also "might" be a bowl gasket causing a problem. Sheesh.

I'm lucky that this one is well preserved and clean and doesn't need an all out restoration. "Resurrection", maybe. But, last night I also poked around into the wee hours detailing the nooks and crannies of the beast before re-installing carbs and headers. It might just look presentable when it goes back together!

Just what I was thinking.

I would never personally put flames on a bike, but if I bought this one, I'd leave them on there. :flamer

There's a bit of a lull in the action while I wait (and wait and wait) for a specialized Honda tool for hitting the synch screws on the carbs. They are in miserable locations and the tool is a godsend, I'm told. Although I don't often pay Honda's penalty fee for these things (this on is $75!), in this case it's pretty much a cost of admission. Pretty much just a screwdriver that runs down the center of an 8mm socket on an extension. Simple, but apparently effective. Supposed to be here next Wednesday.
