Fog Lights (and) What is This?

#1

Post by Lucien Harpress »

I finally was able to put the finishing touch on my 1200 Standard that I wrecked a couple of years ago- a REALLY nice set of fog lights (with matching chrome visor, mirroring the headlight).

I've got it run through a relay, but I still have to finalize the hot wire off the battery with a fuse- it's hard to solder in windy 32 degree weather.

However, I did have a question- when I bought the bike, the visor on the headlight had a small, colored plastic lens on the top. It's kind of grown on me as a feature, and I kinda want to add something similar to the fog light visors as well. Thing is, I can't for the life of me find anything comparable to it. Heck, I don't even know what to search for. Anybody have any clue?

In any case, I'm excited to do a bit more night riding than I have been. When you live in deer country, any bit of light you can get is nice.

You could use the old school blue dots or even yellow dots but they might be too big for a fog light visor. Radio-shack used to sell panel lamps that could possibly be fit in a drilled hole

The blue dots are only really cool from rear on tail light lenses. Makes them look purple. I used to love them. Might even be illegal now. Not sure why they'd be in a visor...

They have no wires to them, and glow when the headlight , or tail light, is on. Using the light of the lamp to light them up. (or so I have been told)

Yes, and positioning of the dot is important within the lens. They need to have the bulb directly behind them for maximum effect.

The page shows a cat's eye product, but it sure isn't the blue dots. They still call them...blue dots!

I always heard that they are on there to let you know that the light is on in the daytime.

(So you don't have to walk around in front to look.???)

I think they were originally so you could tell if a Lucas headlight was on at night :oldies

Or actually, back in the day when bike headlights weren't required in daytime (those laws came about in the mid '70s) and 35W non- halogen incandescent headlights were standard so you could tell if any headlight was on at night when you were under street lights :orange
