Engine painting

#1

Post by dritzman »

I'm working on a new project. Let's just say that it's a 70's inline 4. I'm going to paint the motor and have never done it before. I've read so many differing opinions on what type of paint to use. What type of primer to use. To rattle or not rattle. I think my head might implode. Any recommendations out there of luck/no luck? Any help is appreciated.

VHT is another option. The "Cast Aluminum" is pretty close to original color and I haven't had any problems with it fading, pealing, or flaking off.

VHT is also good. I have used both. VHT especially on headers, and exhaust

I got a spray can of some Duplicolor engine Aluminum (I don't think I used the Cast Aluminum, just the regular stuff) from a local auto parts store for my KZ1300 motor. I got the block as clean as I could, but didn't really sweat the small stuff- it was already pretty good to begin with, and in my opinion if the stuff won't come off with a hard scrubbing, it wasn't going to come off under normal use either.

I may have bothered with primer on this as well, just to give it a bit of help. Both primer and paint sprayed really easily, and once you get a heat cycle or two through the motor, it's actually been pretty resilient. I've got no complaints with it.

I used the Duplicolor 1615 with high heat clear and it looked great! Later on, I changed to Duplicolor Iron with the high heat clear again and it is holding up great!

SNIP

Looks awesome. How long ago did you do this?? I tried the clear on some stuff but found with age it turned a bit amber colored and did not care for it.

I painted with the 1615 in March 2008 with the clear and it stayed looking new right up until I changed the color to Iron with high heat clear in May of 2014. The Iron color and high heat clear still look new!

I used a Rustoleum engine enamel product. The only issues I have are self-inflicted with lazy prep. It's held up pretty well considering.

Engine:
- 1) VHT Engine light primer...................Art.nr: SP-148 (2 Pcs. Spraycan 400 ml)
- 2) VHT Engine universal aluminium......Art.nr: SP-127 (2,5 Pcs. Spraycan 400 ml)
- 3) 2 Component-(gloss)clearcoating from: AUTO-K-Spraymax 2K Klarlack Hochglanz (incl. Härter) Sprühdose 400ml........Art.nr: 680061 (3 Pcs. "two in one"-spraycan 400 ml.) (better resistant against petrol and oil)
Very nice, glossy and "hard" total result !
