knocking 1100

ok, blew up a 1100 engine don't ask . bought another with no history, but has promised to return if problems. only history stated had 16000 miles( of course they always have low miles) Anyway got it in bike,
all belts and timing set and tappets set correctly . correct compression, all good, got carbs schynced. new spark plugs. idles wonderful . HAS a really bad knock from left side. Would the valve in head make this knocking or is inside the engine. this is a solid hard knock that remains as throttle is increased, knock sppeds up but does not disappear. Any other testing to see if in valves train in head or further in?. oil is flowing into both heads.
