I know nothing about your Suzuki but several bikes only turn on the fuel pump when there is an ignition pulse. So the engine has to be cranked with a known good charged battery and with both the key and kill switch in the run position. this is a safety feature to shut off the pump if the engine is off for any reason. My 84 interstate is this way.So it can take a bit of cranking to get enough fuel to the carbs to start. You might fill the carbs with a remote bottle if you have one before trying.
Your decompression may be like the Harley big cubic inch performance kits, up were there is a small electric solenoid/valve that is electrically turned on while cranking that vents a little cylinder pressure to ease cranking force needed and ease the demand on the starter and battery

Thought I had posted the particulars but didn't. It's a 1998 VS1400. When Paul asked about the number of wires, I was counting the wires going to the relay. Saluki's explanation is kind of what I was thinking. I'll have to wait for the battery before going much further.

Spent some time working on this today. The new battery is installed and that helped the fuel pump issue I was asking about. Got her to fire up but only on one cylinder. Could not detect any spark on the front cylinder. Even tried swapping the coils and it still only fired on the rear. Even tried spraying the front carb but still did not hit. Plug wires are molded to the coils so it is not easy to do any swapping. Couldn't find the right socket to pull the plugs before I ran out of time. Might get lucky but not planning on it.

More success today. Got her to fire on both cylinders and managed to get the throttle cables evened out some. Darned thing has straight pipes and it is loud. Had an old set of sporty slip ons to temporarily cut the noise level. Still have a few issues to work out before I can get it out of here. Talked to my son today and now he tells me that he has a manual. I'll get that tomorrow. There is a vac line on each carb that I have no idea where they connect. Gettin there

Each carb has a bowl vent line. The hoses are routed through little loops that are cast part of the rubber air box to carb hose.

So they don't actually connect to anything? Interesting

No, they're vents and go to the atmosphere. The tube from the front carb goes forward and the rear carb vent goes toward the rear. If your son has the factory manual, there's an illustration that shows the hose routing.

It's a clymer manual, not a factory. Only briefly got to leaf through it but didn't see a good shot of the carb area. Only have Mon and Tues to try to get anything done this week. Hope to wrap this one up. Thanks to you Paul for your help.

More progress. She is running on both cylinders. Started putting the final touches on it and I'm almost ready to send it back to my son. Managed to get a short test ride in the neighborhood today. A butt clinching moment when the rear brake did not grab. Bled the system and now it grabs but drags so I plan on pulling the caliper to clean it up.

She is definitely going to get down the road and away from here. Pulled the rear caliper today and got it cleaned up. I'll get it mounted and take another test ride. Should be ready to go.

Well, the Suzuki went back to my son's house. Ran pretty good all the way. Brakes were making some noise but working good. I'm sure I haven't seen the last of this one.
