how old are these tires? **another question!**

#1

Post by 5speed »

In a previous life I sold automotive tires and could tell the date and who made them (worked at Canadian Tire) but bike ties are a new thing to me.
The bike was stored for 10 years..so I'm assuming the tires are at least that old. They have no cracks in them anywhere..and look to be in great condition..
However..they are at least 10 years old...

Found this on line.

"The date of manufacture is the last three digits of the code. The first two digits refer to the week within that year. For example, if the last 3 digits are 022, it means that the tire was manufactured in the second week of the year, and the year is the second year of the decade. This is where it gets confusing -- there's no universal identifier that signifies which decade, so in this example the tire could have been manufactured in 1982 or 1992. Some tires do have a small triangle following the DOT code to indicate the 1990s."

New tire date stamp has 4 digits representing week and year. A four digit code such as 1216 would indicate 12th week in 2016.

The date stamp on your tires "052" indicates that the tire was manufactured in the 5th week in the second year of the decade. The decade is the question.

Hope this helps.

That does look like a small triangle so yea I would say my first statement was incorrect and that tire was made in 92.

Car tires are date stamped as well. Have heard of tire shops that will not mount a tire that has exceeded the date stamp. Only a matter of time before the bike industry gets on board as well. Expect bike tires won't be too much of an issue since they do not last that long anyway.

Cheers

The link you have is for the front tire? The website isn't very specific about size or front/rear, or I'm just easily confused this morning. Nothing new, lol!
Personally, I would rather go one size larger than stock, than one size smaller. But that's just me.

ya it confused me a bit at first..it should show a rear tire beside the front..which indicates you can get a matching rear tire. you have to look it up by size.
I guess the search continues..lol

So if you go up one size on the rear, you should go up one on the front as well. Do you have stock size on now. Anyway also look for ones that have MS on them, as I'm sending more snow your way LOL. We don't need any more here in Alberta, I thought we sent it all to St. Johns this year, WRONG, 8" on Monday and another 8" today.
You're too small to ride a hog Billy!

spent the last hour looking and reading on tires and reminded myself I only have 2 points of contact with the road and they are small points at that...so I went all in and bought a set of Michelin Pilot Activ tires and new tubes. Still have to pick up some new bands..
Great reviews on them so fingers crossed. lol

I went cheap the 5 or 6 years after I started riding again. Used up several sets of the IRC's and the Dunlop 404's, then I decided to try some higher dollar tires and I was really amazed at the difference. Been running the Metzler Marathons for the last 4 or 5 sets now and am very happy with the ride performance.

they "promote" these ones as designed for older bikes that run bias ply...I have zero experience with what a wing rides like period so I won't be able to complain. lol
