New lease on life for an old Honda
A few months ago I finally got around to taking apart a 71 cb350 and I now have a rolling frame to show some progress. There is SO MUCH more still needed to be done to get it ready for spring especially sorting out the absolutely butchered wiring, note the wire nuts in the first pic. It was a failed attempt by a previous owner to bypass the voltage reg which is long gone.

Re: New lease on life for an old Honda
My wife decided she wants to ride now and the cb350 would make a perfect first bike for her so the primary goal right now is to make the bike safe to ride and make it a sharp looking bike as well. I knew right from the start it would be a money pit so before I started I made sure my wife didn't want a more modern bike instead, she insisted she liked it because it would look cool cruising with my cb750 so she gave me the go ahead to fix it up. I sure hope she actually rides it when I'm done because I'll have more money into it than what it's worth. I'm trying to keep a tight budget on it so I've been sand blasting, painting and polishing as much as I can myself, I even relaced the rims with stainless steel spokes myself but I did have to send the frame to the powder coater ...... it was too big to fit in my blast cabinet. The only upgrade or update however you want to put it is the front end off a 74 cb360 along with tapered steering head bearings, I actually preferred the look of the front drum but wasn't happy with the forks.

Thanks. The biggest expenses are out of the way but it's 20 and 30 "dollaring" me to death right now, all the bits and pieces needed to finish it up may seem inexpensive at first but they add up real quick when you figure them all in.Gowing wrote:Welcome scot, cool 350, one of my first love affairs, I like the drum brake too, but the disc is nice

Re: New lease on life for an old Honda
It's been full of surprises but it's getting there. I had all kinds of fun repairing the wiring harness and then getting it all working, most of the problems were due to poor grounds caused by powder coated frame, dirty connections and a broken wire in one of the controls but everything electrical is now working like it should, the only unknown is the charging sys which I wont know till I actually fire it up. I'm multitasking at the moment trying to get the tank and side covers prepped for paint while trying to figure out the best way to route the clutch and throttle cables which is waiting on me to get the carbs mounted so I can do it. While getting the wiring sorted out I found out the OP had installed a 72 or 73 seat which looks pretty much the same as a 71 seat however the latch mechanism is completely different and incompatible with the 71 seat latch which explains why its latch is missing. I'm starting to see light at the end of the tunnel so it shouldn't be all that long till I get it fired up.

Re: New lease on life for an old Honda
My attention to detail is driving me crazy. The bike was never intended to be a show bike but rather a nice clean bike for my wife to ride but any time I go to mount something and all I have is rusty nuts or bolts while everything else is shiny and new then those rusty bolts just wont do so off to the hardware store I go for new bolts. You wouldn't believe how much the cost of stainless bolts adds up. The chrome on the front turn signals and stems was in pretty bad shape, they will eventually get replaced later this summer but in the mean time I sandblasted them, painted them silver then clearcoat so they would at least be presentable till we do get new ones. Same for the ignition coils, they're still usable but I'd like to replace them as well just not right now. My main concern right now is making it roadworthy soon so my wife can get some ride time in then worry about the "finishing touches" later on.

Re: New lease on life for an old Honda
It's almost complete, I just need to get the chrome trim that goes along the bottom of the tank and a few other things for it to be officially complete but at the moment it's complete enough to ride. Please forgive the handgrips, they're just a pair i had laying around so I stuck them on just so I could ride it. I rode it for the first time Sunday just for a quick test ride about a mile down the road and back and so far so good. I'll have it insured and plated by this weekend so my youngest son can stop by and ride with me because before handing it over to my wife I want to take it on at least an hour long ride to make sure everything on the bike is doing what it's supposed to and running correctly. My wife just got he riders permit today and she's nervous and excited at the same time so we'll be doing a lot of riding this weekend provided her bike checks out good.

Re: New lease on life for an old Honda
What a nice looking bike. I wish I could have had that for my starter bike. I took that MSF course before I got my motorcycle endorsement, that class helped me understand motorcycle riding alot better. In Oklahoma if you get your MSF certificate you don't have to take your motorcycle driver test or the motorcylce written test which was another bonus.
