Like tits on a boar hog

Tractor won't start. Battery's dead. It's got a maintainer on it so why's it dead? Who knows. Try the whiz -bang 21st century electronic Univac battery charger. It should have a little display that says 'I don't think so'. Or maybe it tweets that. I mean, why would a battery charger do anything to a battery that actually needs charging? God forbid it should over-extend its sensitive self. So as usual, I drag out my early 60's Schauer battery charger, hook it up and 1/2 hour later the tractor fires up.
I suppose the new compressors are going to turn their noses up at a flat tire and say (or tweet) 'Are you kidding? The things flat. I'm not messing with it'.
Glad I held on to my old charger.

They're like boar hogs, they don't exist.

The majority of the equipment on my families ol' farm in the mountains of NC is old. The drill press is driven by leather belts!! Nothing can get it down except for the occasional belt slip.

The newer technology chargers seem to balk at charging a really flat battery. Something in its micro brains programming must decide that the battery is toasted. I do exactly the same thing as you. Drag out the old transformer style charger and at least get it up to 50% charge, then let the smart charger take over.

I've got 3 of these newer microprocessor based technology units and they all act the same way with a dead flat battery. Maybe the programmers were in cahoots with the battery vendors as every battery I charge that way is still operating but according to the charger, it should be scrapped.

From a little bit of a whine about a changing world to politics, just like that. I don't recall where I read this, but someone else wrote that to fool the new chargers into charging you need to hook up a second good battery so the sensor read enough bolts to charge. I think it was here, but could have been somewhere else.

Many of the new smart chargers need around 6-7 volts to start. I have used a regular 9-volt battery with a connector to quickly flash the thing into starting the charging cycle after it is connected to the dead battery. Works in a pinch

This brought back a memory from a service call I was accomplishing on a large piece of TORO mowing equipment with a dead ECU almost 25 years ago, 100 miles from the shop.
I had installed a new ECU, proceeded to program it, and the battery in the laptop was dead. The laptop's battery charger wasn't powering up the computer, either. :-?
This was on a Friday afternoon, the day before I was leaving for a scheduled week's vacation.

To finish this story, I recalled a person had previously told me that he'd bumped their laptop battery back to life in a similar circumstance by flashing it with jumper cables from an automotive battery.
So...... being somewhat desperate to have this mowing machine operational again on the next Monday morning, when I was hopefully 650 miles away from the shop, I apprehensively did the same. ZAP!
Then, I re-installed the battery back into the laptop, plugged in the laptop's charger again, and the computer booted up and allowed me to successfully program the new ECU. The machine was alive again, and the operator and I were no longer sweating bullets.!!! action1

Subsequently, I left for vacation the next day. :-D
