Lots of good ideas.
Dont forget that just like cell phones, credit cards sometimes fail to work also.
Carry a reasonable amount of cash. Well hidden. And dont use it unless its your only option.

When I first got my 75 wing the first breakdown was a broken clutch cable. I bought a selection of cable stops from oreillys. Got me by till my cable got here. I ride with one always now.

Some good suggestions, thank you. Adding to the list. Those cable stops are a good idea, might buy a few and toss them in a small baggie. I just replaced my clutch cable and lubed it, but you never know.

Ahhh!! I didn't realize you were running tubes. I'm pretty sure my 78 is tubeless since it doesn't have spokes. Brain fart.

I always kept a set of tools dedicated to my '77. Anything I used regularly on the bike went with me on the road. Plus most of the stuff in the "Whiskerfish" kit. As for tire irons...you gotta be a special kinda man if you can get break down a wheel on a GL1000 to the point of patching a tube on the side of the road.

Depending on who you ask, I am special. To my girl, the good kind. To my friends, the "ed" kind.

I've done tubes before on bikes. I'm not the fastest, but swapping a tube out isn't terribly difficult either.

Forget that torx tool. Multi tool as well. Best advice was given above. About the only other thing that I would suggest: replace those old valve stems. I put metal ones on my bike and also new metal valve caps. You have recently replaced your timing belts?

So one of my saddlebags has my toolkit:

Spare pull and push throttle cables
Spare clutch cable
2mm-19mm socket set
8mm-17mm box wrench set
Vice grips
Pliers
Wire cutters
Wire
monkey wrench
allen wrench set
various phillips, standard and JIS screwdrivers
600 mph tape
Gorilla tape
Zipties of various sizes
Spare headlight and taillight bulbs
LOTS of spare fuses
Spare innertube
Latex gloves
Battery powered tire inflator


That's what I carry around all the time. Other stuff gets added when I'm going long distance (over 200 miles)

I like to think that its adequate....
