Heh. Motorcyclists are either overdressed, or underdressed. No in-between. But as we age, we find that looking cool usually means BEING cool.

I figured that. I was just busting your chops. Sure does look mighty fine in that sunshine.Lucien Harpress wrote: ↑Mon Mar 07, 2022 8:56 am I probably did about two hours on the road. It was chilly, but I keep forgetting "single layer of jeans" isn't great when it's under like 75 degrees.

Oh, I figured. But I did a double-take of the post and realized I didn't ACTUALLY specify if I went out or not.
The sad thing is, I actually bundled up several layers up top. I just keep forgetting legs get cold too.

Re: CB750 K2- Much Better
Had a chance to take the 750 out for a minute, and while it ran great, I do see some work for the future. Steering head bearings are a known issue, and the leaky tach drive was something I was living with. However, a quick look of the engine after a short ride showed a noticeable and not entirely unexpected head gasket leak. Between this thread and others it seems like this is a common problem, and while it's not a HUGE deal, it's also a Honda- it's not supposed to leak.
So, probably this winter, hopefully after I button up my GL1000 100% I'm looking at another engine-out for the CB. I've got a replacement valve cover that hopefully leaks a bit less I can swap with, and I feel like new engine studs are in my future. It's not a big priority, so I'm not starting it until I clear some stuff off the list, but there's enough to fix at this point I may as well just get it done.

Can you get the cam/valve cover off in frame? I know you can't get the head off in frame.

Not the early ones. They sell frame kits where you essentially cut the frame rails and re-mount them with tube clamp/mounts (leaving the backbone) so those sections are removable, but I'm not a huge fan of cutting up a frame on a bike I intend to ride quite a bit.

Re: CB750 K2- Much Better
On my last ride a couple days ago, the clutch was slipping pretty bad before it warmed up, and even a bit afterwards. I haven't touched the clutch since I rebuilt the bike, so the fact it lasted this long is kind of a surprise. Anyway, before taking it to Gilmore next weekend, I decided to get new plates and refresh it.
Did you know you can put a CB750 clutch together turned 90 degrees out of alignment, and it doesn't work? And it's super hard to tell, but it won't function? In any case, here's the end of my clutch cable I managed to rip off.
I've got a replacement ordered, but it might take 5-9 days to get here (Gilmore is in 8). I'm going to try a local bike shop to see if they have anything, but it's for a bike from 1972, plus I'm running shorter bars so it's not even stock length. I'm not WORRIED-worried it will be late, but it would be nice to have a day or two buffer to make sure everything works before the two-hour ride to Kalamazoo.
Have I mentioned I'm a good mechanic lately?

...or, "Scratch One More Thing Off My Motorcycling Bucket List".
Or, "Chains Are [Removed By Profanity Filter]".
Was all set to go on a longer ride today- the weather was nice, and I've been spending too much time wrenching and not enough time riding. Got to the gas station, filled up, took off, and next thing I know my engine is dead and I've got aluminum pieces bouncing down the road.
But hey, new feature: Transmission Inspection Hole!
I've been getting good and trailering these things....
I'm not quite sure how I'm going to approach this. Replacement motors are available, but quality is always a question mark. I've got a solid set of cases in the back yard, but they've been sitting outside for a couple years, and I've never rebuilt a bottom end before. On the other hand, I'd planned on doing a bunch of work on the CB750 this winter, which included some engine-out stuff. Either way, I've got time to think on it.
Guess I've got more reason to get that 1000 back together now.

Re: CB750 K2- I Miss Shaft Drive
Most likely, yeah. Sad thing is, it let go AFTER I lubed it for the first time in a while. And it did look like the master link was involved somehow, because that sucker is GONE. The chain was new when I put the bike together, but there's a couple things that might've... not helped.
--Should've lubed it more.
--I didn't change the front or rear sprockets when I put the chain on (but they appeared to be in decent shape).
--Tension seemed...oddly inconsistent.
To the last point, right before it went it seemed like I was tensioning it way more often than I should've. Like, only a couple hundred miles between going from about an inch of slack (the proper amount) to WAY too loose. Maybe I was running things too tight and that's what did it?
Regardless, what's done is done. And for better or worse, looks like I'm learning some new skills.

Re: CB750 K2- I Miss Shaft Drive
What was the tensile strength of the chain when you bought it? If it was one of the low end DID chains, they are only about 6930 pounds. So many chains have broken the cases on CB750s and it is because of poor quality chains. The minimum DID chain for a CB750 would be a NZ model which has a tensile strength of 8600 pounds. This is the one I selected for my last CB750 project and after seeing your post, I am going to order a new chain of better quality to replace it. One that has 9000+ pounds and with a riveted master link. The one I have now has a removable master link. I am also going to get new sprockets for that bike and plan to use 18/45 instead of the 18/48 to lower the highway RPMs a bit. Good luck.
