Harley mufflers

#1

Post by guidowitz »

I want to remove my original exhaust off of my 1976 and put on straight HD mufflers.

There are a ton on eBay but I don't know what would set would be best (year, model) to choose from.

I want something that needs to least amount of mods..

Any favorite picks ?

Lot of members get sporty take offs and they sound pretty good on the wing, no matter what type you get there will be some work involved to get them to sit where you want.

Early Sportster take offs are the best. IMO They don't use a crossover that you need to some how plug. I've used them on other bikes besides GL's. Not that bad to make them work.

I don't know the year. I just look up Sportster mufflers and look to see if they have the cross over. ;)

I would think you'd want a matched pair and to me, the price is a little steep. I've found several new take off pairs at the local flea market for $20/pr.
Check with your local Harley dealer, might get a pair before they toss them in the dumpster. (For a small "tip") anim-cheers1
One of the first things new HD owners want "upgraded".
Great to keep these old 'Wings flying on down the road.

The one in the ebay ad is not a Sportster muffler, either. They have a different bracket. I used them on my '78 and did nothing other than make hanger brackets, header shims and bolted them right up. Some fab up an intermediate pipe, but I found it not to be necessary. You can see one of the Sporty mufflers in the attached shot. Note the bracket. There was no crossover on those I found - on craigslist, $40 for the pair.

If you get a set with the crossover port, you can plug them with a freezeplug.
And most people will never notice them.
Or you could be different and install a piece of tubing and retain the balance pipe.
