That's exactly why a 1st Gen VMax sleeps in my garage. (Although I wouldn't quite call it cheap). You could throw a lot of money at a GL and still not come close to the V4 Max level of performance.

But, I love cruising the naked wing, looking down and seeing those fat cylinders hanging out in the wind. As long as you're not looking to pick fights on the street, they run just fine as they are. It's become my main ride.

I had a 75 Chevy Monza and it was a Sleeper and a LOT of fun. To build a sleeper GL would be just awesome I think.

This type of modification on an old wing, is just a labor of love. You cannot justify it from a cash, or time required to make it happen, perspective. I am fortunate, I can do it and stay within my 'toy budget'. I just tell the wife my ONLY other choice is a brand new VROD or, VMAX etc. Please, nobody tell her I can get a used one. ;)

I think the vast majority of these builds are started out and completed upside down financially. It has to be "labor of love" that keeps us doing it time and time again otherwise they would call us funny names and make us wear white coats that had the sleeves tied in the back.

My fj1100 would go into the tens in quarter mile with a good rider back in the day, and third gear roll on times are still some of the fastest even today, but my 75 gl still amazes me
with the ability to go fast, maybe it's the "not so good suspension and brakes" combined
with my advancing age that makes a perfect combination. The fj is fun and fast, but the gl is
just perfect. It might be more perfect with a supercharger on it though.

Maybe not the supercharger, but I have given serious consideration to the notion of the dual Weber setup once or twice. Maybe down the road, as long as I don't sacrifice "driveability".

While pricey, it's not insanely so and is a very IN YOUR FACE mod that gets noticed right NOW.

Not that anybody here is looking for that...

There was a 78 at Vintage days a couple of years ago, full dress, with a blower, seem to think he wanted 7500.00 for it.

Nothing more humbling than to spend a little time going through photos of projects people have done. There is just no end to the imagination and talent of a determined human in his man cave.

I take back what I said about the cost. "Damn the torpedoes" as a brave captain should say...
