Rear drive oil.

#1

Post by 6adan »

I saw where Randakk's recommended a oil that would help seal the rear drive. I have looked on his site but can not find it. Can anyone tell me what kind it was?

I do not recall seeing that. I know it needs to be hypoid oil due to the gear design or it can build excessive heat and promote wear. Make sure you are leaking oil and not just slinging grease residue from the hub interface.

I saw that here recently but I can't remember what brand it was. You could try sending Randakk an email.
My own opinion is that even in cases where those types of fixes actually work - they're a stopgap at best and don't address the problem directly. A worn seal needs to be replaced. The big seal and o-ring on the output of the 1000 final drive were still available last time I looked. Re-torquing the big retaining ring to set the gear preload is the tough part.

I had a tiny leak so I tried the Lucas Hub oil. The leak is now gone and that's been since maybe January of 2013. Anyway it's been quite a while. The Lucas product also smells better than the Kawasaki product I was using.

Thanks, that is what I needed to know. I have a couple of GLs with just enough leek to get it dirty but not even close to a drip.
