I took the bike for the last ride before tearing it down. It shifted into all 8 gears just fine. Then I did some dis-assembly this evening. I found a really nice wasp nest up in the body of the bike and lots of grease, oil, dirt and gunk!

It's been awhile since I've worked on one of those. In the second pic. Looks like a hole just to the right and down from the shift shaft. Optical illusion? I hope.

I think Greg is right. There are two "holes" in the engine that I thought were a really bad go at first. I believe that both of them are designed that way. When I get the engine cleaned up, I'll take some close up pictures. The crankcase is full of oil and not a drop has come out of the engine since I brought it home. I have the bike completely dis-assembled now. As usual I found I few things that I will replace that I was not counting on, but overall not too bad. I have some major cleaning in front of me now. Then I need a bit of welding before I can get parts to the powder coater.

I have been doing more dis-assembly and cleaning.

Looks like someone has been in the carb. Note the double washers on the intake and the white headed oval screws with two washers. UUUUGGGGHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!

Overall, its looking positive. I will soon know what I need to order for parts. I have a buddy touching up some parts with a welder and then I'll get in touch with the powder coater.

Had a buddy fix some parts with the welder. Today it was cleaning and polishing, polishing and cleaning! I should have some pics tomorrow of the progress. Parts were delivered to the powder coater yesterday. A lot less involved than a wing! Having fun with this!

I have been hitting the parts with a fine wire wheel in the garage. That has stripped off most of the rust and gunk. It is also the first step with the parts that will be polished.
Before and after step one.

I have also been working on the Caddy as I stated in the intro to this thread. For what its worth:

and I found several hair pins, some corn, a part pack of dentine gum and a 62 and 64 penny

I place my order of oem parts yesterday at the local dealership. He beat the price I had form Western Honda for each part. Have to pay taxes but no shipping. I got a lot accomplished today. It warmed up a bit so the garage was about 45 degrees. I finished about 90% of the wire brushing and buffing that needs to be done in the garage. Here are some pics in the bike's present condition.

Looks like a fun project. I am sure your daughter will appreciate it. Maybe florescent orange would be a better (safer) color?

I watched TV in the man-cave last night while I worked on the bike. I re-assembled the handlebar switches. About a week ago I finally bought a dremel tool. Wasn't sure how much I would use it, but it has already come in very handy. I used it to easily clean up the contact points in the switches. They consist of tiny ball bearings copper contacts, tiny springs, washers, plastic pieces and I think I saw a small kitchen sink thrown in for good measure. I shot a small spring across the room and thought it was a goner. After a few minutes on my knees I found it. I was able to then get them all back together. I even think they may work.
Image

I also cleaned up the points plate and am waiting for new points.
Image

And now I am mostly in a waiting mode for the powder coated parts and the oem replacements, so I did a little painting.

More later. Sounds like my wife is going to get some culture (an art museum or something) in me this afternoon.

Thanks Steve. Not Lulu-like in detail nor Sonny-like in polishing, but I think it will turn out OK.
