I did the "leak-down" test last night. Cylinders 3 and 5 held fine but number 1 leaked badly. I figure that I will need to replace all three exhaust valves and all three intake valves. This project seems to be snowballing on me!
Hope for the best, expect the worst and take what comes!

Take some consolation in the fact that it's a 12-valver and not an 18 or 24. ;)

Live and learn, eh Ern?

I'm not there to see, but from what I read above and looking at your pics, is not the exhaust valve on cylinder 1 the only one bent and in need of replacement?

Time to weigh in Ernie... Since the head is out and you're going to need to replace a valve and seal, AND you are going to want to ride this puppy a long time...

Replace all of the valve seals, spec each and every valve, have the head ground. test each valve spring for spec, Replace anything not up to full spec. Check the cams and cam bearings for spec. Hitting a valve can bend a cam, and ruin a bearing. Then you can button this baby up and ride it with confidence..

Get your magnifying glass out and inspect the area shown below. Rub some ink across that area and wipe, looking for a crack. My eye may be playing tricks on me, hopefully so.

The cost to get every thing right will not be much more than patching one problem.

Let me know if you want some used stock valves. I think I have a few.
I also have a ported set of heads, and a set that are ported and have 1mm larger valves... just in case you have too much money ;-)

Oh and two sets of stock heads, and a set of heads from a GL1500 gold wing, hydraulic lifter...

I don't know that I would spend the money on surfacing the head unless there is some kind of surface damage. I'd inspect the guides to be sure they weren't damaged, check the cam bearing towers, replace the bent valves, grind the valves, new stems seals, and off to the races. I've only had to surface one set of Valk heads, and that was because the guy doing the valve grinding damaged the surface somehow.

Hmm? Good point. I never heard of Stellite. The manual says the valves can not be ground, the say replace them. But I can say that mine have been ground, 50,000 60,000 miles ago. And all of my ported heads were reground, except the over sized valve heads.
I'll have to do some research on that.

Edit: the book says to lap the valves. From what I've read you shouldn't lap Stellite Coated valves.
