I have used 1996 Sportster mufflers along with about 6" of the HD pipes, That way you can use the rear footpeg nut to hold them, and it looks kind of good. I bought all of it for 55$ delivered to Canada. also note that on the One side you will see some HD notification printed on the muffler, which is normaly hidden on the sportster because the pipe is hung upside down on the HD

I went to the local Harley mechanic and asked for "Shorty" mufflers... He had several different type (internally) and i chose the set with the biggest bore and following his instructions knocked out a washer type restrictor that was tacked welded in about 8 inches from the exit,,, Great quality chrome, as new Au$100 i was happy for that price...

Couldn't be more pleased with my sportster (? could be from a dyna) muffler project. Look and sound is just about perfect. I don't like loud fartpipe exhaust but the low frequencies are there, snarls like a caged tiger. I added about 4" of specially welded connection tube between the stock headers and the muffler inlet, and welded shut the crossover flange. You can see the custom steel triangular mounting bracket here.

I think it was 2003 where either it was the last year without a crossover or the crossover tube started to appear.

My friend has an '04 883 sportster and it has the crossover pipe.

I think I was one of the first to recommend putting HD mufflers on a 'Wing on the old Classic 'Wings MSN group (it was a long time ago - Zrider may have been first). A buddy of mine bought a couple of milk crates of them from a Harley place at a swap meet. They were so cheap he ended up with them on not only his & his wife's bikes but his pickup, his bobcat and whatever else he had with a motor. I think I paid him $10 each for the ones that are still on my 'Wing 18 years and well over 100,000 Km later.

They don't last as long in winter use. The ones I paid $20 for at the local aftermarket Harley place for Eccles in 2008 are starting to rust out near the automotive u-bolt clamps so plans are in the works to replace them with a set that my brother in law grabbed when his neighbour was putting them out to the curb. I haven't decided what to do about the crossover pipe stubs yet...

I just bought a complete HD Dyna system , headers, clamps, complete. This system has the cross over pipe in the header pipe so no problem with cross over at the muffler. The Dyna is 1/2 shorter than a "shorty" and has a more versatile side mount. I got lucky bought at a swap meet for $15, in perfect condition. A new HD muffler clamp is $8! Like I say lucky.

Because of the lengthy exhaust pipe section between each gl header and its complementing muffler, the 2 Dyna Softail mufflers on my trike are supported only by their very robust H-D muffler clamp.
( mufflers in essence are just hung off the end of their individual exhaust pipe)
No surfaces are readily available to place a muffler body supporting strap that far away from the usual gl frame mounting points.
After 13,527 miles, the mufflers are still intact with no signs of fracturing at their H-D factory weld seam at the muffler inlet.
Hopefully now, after I've bragged on them, it's still going to be a continuing testament to the quality of materials they are built with.
