Suspensions and stuff

#1

Post by Track T 2411 »

I consider myself a pretty fair 'wrench' as far as DIY stuff goes; if nothing else, I at least have enough sense to know when I'm in over my head. Such is the case when it comes to suspensions, geometry, track, trail, and all that good stuff. Does anyone have any suggestions/links for good reliable in-depth info regarding everything 'springy?'

Current Rides:
'Grumpy' - '81 Standard, now fully dressed.
'Layla' - '81 Standard w/dealer installed fairing and Hondaline bags.
'Scarlett' '76 'Survivor' nekkid as a j-bird!

Under Construction:
The 'Jalopy' '78-'79 Mash-up
'Quikie' '81 gl1100I back on the lift, project with the step-son!

In The Shed:
'81 gl1100I barn find aka "Josie, the farmer's daughter." (almost comatose build)
'77 gl1000, roller parts bike.
'82 gl1100I, 'Old Crusty' titled roller parts bike (free!)
'82 gl1100I, My first 'Wing, and an expensive lesson!

If you have some time you can search "Suspension for Mortals" on Youtube. It is a couple of hours of suspension setup, geometry, and other information that can help you wrap your head around it. It is presented by Max MacCallister, who is the President of Traxxion Dynamics. Most of it is broken up into individual chapters, so you can work your way through them.

I am sure there are lots of other resources out there, but it would be a decent start.
1975 GL1000 - Delkevic exhaust with stainless studs, Corbin Touring seat, Race Tech Gold Valve cartridge emulators, Progressive 11-1100 springs, Progressive 412HD rear shocks, Shinko 230 tires, Fork Brace, Trucklite 27270c headlight, X-Arc Signals (run, brake, turn), Hydraulic Clutch conversion, EBC Clutch discs, HD springs, and Barnett Steels + Plate B eliminated. BikeMaster DLFP-50N18L Lithium battery, Rick's Motorsports CBR600F4 Mosfet Regulator/Rectifier upgrade.

Just don't feel bad if you still don't fully grasp it all at first.
