1975 brochure

#1

Post by takehikes »

I was looking at a 1975 brochure and it clearly showed the horn and taillight bracket were painted black not chromed. Did any make it to production like that? Was there a running change?
I’m curious as I kind of like the look.

It might be a European spec. I know the horns were different (I've seen pics where they lack the chrome cover and the bracket is twisted 90 degrees so the horn faces forward), and the black taillight bracket was done on the euro CB750s. It wouldn't be a stretch to think it happened on the 1000s as well.

It’s odd because if you look around some brochures show black and some chrome. I know there is lag between pre-production and mid year running changes. Mostly I’m just curious about it.

Early brochures and service manuals were made with pre-production models. BTW, reviewed my video that includes serial #002 and it definitely has chromed tail light and horn.

That tail light bracket in particular was also used on a ton of models, blacked and chromed. It might've been the closest part available for that photo shoot.

What does the rear fender look like? Euro (or at least UK) spec bikes ran a longer rear fender due to the larger license plates. I've occasionally tried to find one because I do like the look quite a bit, but never for the prices they command.

I too have seen a few brochures that show a black tailight & horn bracket, but I’ve never seen one in real life including the pre-production 75 I got to ride before they were officially for sale anywhere.

But I’ll add this, if you like those brackets in black,, go for it! With these bikes being over 50yrs old and lots of rusty non fixable parts available just do some up in black. Now with that said there are a number of “it’s gotta be 100% oe stock” folks that will just have fits about it but if it’s your bike and that’s what you want go for it !

My taillight bracket is solid but chrome is toast so I was already thinking of painting it black. Same with fenders. Though cost wise I may wing it with chromish looking powder coat.
for me I intend to leave the bike as stock as possible but I'm not investing in chrome all over it. It will be a solid rider, not interested in 100 point restoration.

All GL 1000s that arrived in Europe, except the UK, in 1976/77 had black engine mounts, headlamp mount rear.

Paola, same here , except for the 76 LTD models which had a lot of chrome and then the 77 and on models had chromed engine mounts. The headlight ears were chrome on all models from 75 and on. On the LTD’s the chrome was also a “show” chrome which had a thicker and deeper appearance vs the standard more “industrial” chrome.

I did count it up years back, can't quite remember, but I think it was 12 (or maybe more) different tail light/indicators/ brackets over the 5 years and different regional regulations.
With the number of changes on these bikes over those years, I don't know Honda ever made any money from them.

I’m thinking budget wise to dechrome(derust!) a few minor items and go black. Probably will shoot red on tins as that’s its original color. But will do so in candy and flake%

I learned the hard way that if you use electrolysis to remove rust it will remove chrome too.
