Bad starter?

#1

Post by tory »

Was going to start and tune my 78 project today.
I have a brand new AGM battery. I ran fuel lines to the pump, and one from the pump to a can. I added 3 gallons of gas to the tank.

I was going to crank it until gas came out of the pump. Then attach the line to carbs

Only cranked a few seconds at a time, Although probably more than I should have (never did get gas)

Then, it wouldn't crank again. Still had lights on, until I hit the button again, then lost all power.
Battery has 0 voltage, and if I connect a jump box and cross the solenoid it does nothing. I connected the jump box direct to the starter it does arc but not spin.

Did I toast the starter that quickly? Then that fry the battery?

Have you ever heard of a battery doing that? AGM and won't even light a test light.

I have heard of getting a brand new battery that was no good. That is my bet.

Ebay. Yes I know, my own fault.

Although battery is definitely bad, when I put the battery from my 1200 in it, I did get power back. But no starter.

Could the starter take out the battery?

Yes, where did you get the battery? ( ok, just read ebay)

Did you have to fill a dry-charged battery cells with an included electrolyte package?

Was the battery fully and correctly charged ( with an AGM type capable battery charger ) before you first time connected it to the bike's positive and negative cables.

I would check the path of the voltage from the battery to the starter. Especialy the connections at the relay. And the ground at the frame. Check the battery voltage from pos. at the battery, to a good frame ground. Not across the battery. Starters are easy to repair. If you like, bring it by and I will take look at it. I do have a good spare, should it come to that.

I was a filled, sealed AGM battery. I did peak it with an AGM charger.

It went from a good fast crank, to no crank, (just the solenoid click) to nothing (no lights 0 volts) in a matter of seconds.

Makes me wonder if the starter toasted, then when I hit the button again again it killed the battery.
But didn't crank dead. Just went from good to nothing.

I checked a test light across the battery and was surprised it did not light. So I pulled the battery and put a meter on it. 0 volts.

With the other battery in, the lights (headlight, neutral light...) came back on, but only clicks.

I crossed the solenoid but still not crank. Then I ran a booster box direct to the starter. Neg on the long housing bolt, and Pos on the stud. It did nothing. I expected a spin.

I appreciate the offer fir help. I may take you up on it. May have to be an evening. Other wise it will be a couple weeks before I can get a day.

With the booster I would have expected it to spin. You may have found a dead spot on the starter.

I've never pulled a starter without the bike on the side stand.
This bike is strapped straight up and down on a table.

Am I safe to pull the starter out like this?
