how to repair cosmetic frame damage

#1

Post by rcmatt007 »

My 78 had two different sidecars attached over the years. This has left several areas of exposed frame with cosmetic damage to the frame. I admit, I have obsessive trait ( a "trait" is when you drive the people around you crazy, whereas a "disorder" is when it drives you crazy).
These areas are visible (except the last0 when the bike is together.
so the options are 1: leave it alone; 2: use a welder to fill in the spots and then grind it to perfection. Just use cheapo bondo knowing it will not last

I suppose a fourth option would be to fill with solder

rough it up and use short strand fiberglass filler to fill the spots and if needed spot puddy to fill imperfections.

Rodger, they must be friends to remember details of your floor adventure, they keep you in mind ! Personally I would just use some of the short strand fiberglass filler suggested above. I’d be afraid of compromising the integrity of the frame with any heat to pull it out or solder it and if you pay attention you can finish it well enough so that no one would ever notice it, just take your time.

I guess I kinda thought that with the experience of this bunch someone would’ve just popped up and said it’s real easy to fix by doing this & this, they may yet !

Personally I like using the plumber putty that comes in a tube. Snip some off and kneed it till the color is consistent. Spread it over the area and feather the edges with wet fingers. Stuff dries to a very hard surface that can be sanded or drilled as needed. I've even used it to patch holes in the exhaust system.

well I tried solder, but I really couldn't get it hot enough for the lead free stuff to stick and so it rolled off. Then I went to welding. I would NOT do that again. One: I am not that good of a welder; and two: the frame tubing is REALLY thin. Anyway bondo and then some resin into the flaws, and it does look better.
In retrospect, the jb weld may have been the best choice.
