Re: Won't start post-carb rebuild
It started!
Started by taking Lucien's advice and checked for spark and compression (the coarse method he described). All good there.
Then, got a turkey baster, took off the top and used that as a funnel to fill the carbs with 180 cc of gas. I realized at that point that my idle mixture screws were all the way in. I backed them out 2 turns, and cranked it - it caught briefly but petered out. I adjusted the idle mixture screws some more (a process made harder by the fact that PO buggered em up good), and lo and behold, it caught and settled into an idle around 1000 cc, nice if a bit lumpy.
Thanks a ton to all of you for your advice and help! Onwards.

Re: Won't start post-carb rebuild
Yes! Success, now just set the idle mixture screws 3 turns out & leave them there.

Do I not need to set them when syncing carbs...?

Re: Won't start post-carb rebuild
Some carbs are fairly picky about the idle screw settings. The GL1000 carbs are NOT one of them. Set 'em at 3, forget about them.

Re: Won't start post-carb rebuild
Great! Does this means I don't need to sync the carbs? Forgive me if I am being dense here, but as far as I understand, those idle mixture screws are the only way to sync. If I'm setting them to 3 turns out and forgetting about them, I'm assuming that the carbs are now synced and carrying on, yeah?

Re: Won't start post-carb rebuild
The idle mixture screws don't synch the carbs. You need to connect vacuum gauges and adjust the balance screws for that.

Re: Won't start post-carb rebuild
Ooof. Clearly needed to re-read that and go thru that section of Randakk's DVD again. Thanks for setting me straight.

Re: Won't start post-carb rebuild
I do - its how I got this far! But sometimes the pictures are blurry/not easy to see, and for someone still figuring their way around carburetors, Randakks and this website have proven to be gold.
