Coarse throttle cable adjuster stuck?

#1

Post by DSA »

Hi,

I'm re-installing my throttle cables. I've lubed them and set them in place at the carbs - but now I am not able to adjust the slack. The upper adjustment by the handlebar works just fine, but the coarse one that lives near the airbox does not appear to be functioning correctly. In the attached image, when I turn the barrel (4), the threaded rod (3) also turns. That isn't supposed to the case, is it?

What are my options here? Ive tried loosening the jam nut (2) and turning it till it is tight against whatever (1) is, but even then cannot get the barrel to turn relative to the threaded rod. I sprayed it with a little Free All - just a question of waiting for that to work its magic?

Jam nut (2) is to jam 3 and 4. Hold 3 carefully with pliers and turn 4. They like to stick a little. Spray some squirrel pee on it (penetrant) and let it soak if needed.

Success! Thanks for the suggestion. Next issue is that I can't seem to get the slack just right - either the throttle doesn't snap back promptly, or I have a ton of slack. I think I may just need new throttle cables. The PO had bar risers on, and a weird routing for the cables.

Try this
Yes! Following the Factory cable routing is important, as is smooth cables and throttle tube action. Also, a rough acting cable now just might be early indication of pending cable failure. In a remote valley with no cell reception and nasty switch backs on either end of it (so even vice grip on the end of the broken cable wouldn't get you home). Yes, experience.

Pretty sure I am routing it as described above. Agreed, I think best course here is just to replace, specially since I am not sure if these are stock. It's not like they're super pricy, and I'm due a big Randakk's order anyway :)

New cables arrived and installed - that fixed it. Same routing as before. Guess mine were just tired!

also if the right grip is a little cock-eyed it can stick.
