redglbx wrote: Fri Dec 23, 2022 10:22 am I’ve called NGK tech a couple of times and years ago talked to their “techs” at a show and have gotten several different answers. The plug cap 5kohm resistance is meant to act as a pseudo choke to properly fill the coils, over the years we’ve preached to replace any plug cap that is over the 5k ohm resistance as they tend to cause all kinds of little “run” problems (to much resistance?) the caps are supposed to be less than 5k , so common sense would dictate that adding resistor plugs which properly spec’d for your wing will provide another 5k for a total of around 10k resistance, should cause intermittent run issues.

So I’ve recently taken to removing the resister from the caps and using a piece of brass/copper to replace it and then just using resistor plugs which get replaced/refreshed periodically. Just keep in mind that the resistor caps were used w/o resistor plugs and used solid core plug wires. It’s not really about EMI but more about fully charging the coils. Anyway that’s my take.

On the generic green China 3ohm eBay coils, I have used them and they do seem function fine, and at $50 a pair it’s hard to argue with that.
Now this info makes great since to me, thank you for sharing. I purchased the set of Dyna green coils from ebay with their wires and caps cost was just under 200, then purchased a set of NGK iridium resistor plugs, should all be delivered next week. I decided to try their non resistor caps bc I believe they will seal well around the spark plug and keep moisture out just like wires on any vehicle should do. However I'll be keeping the original caps just incase I decide to go a different route.

Thank you, That's good info to know, I definitely want to use parts that work well with others and last.

Thank you all for your time and info you have shared with me. Currently I ride a 99 1500, but I built a 78 gl1000 for my oldest son and now building a 78 gl1000 for my youngest son, his first motorcycle. So with 2 of the gl1000 I'm learning all I can as I've done everything to these bikes on my own without any books, just past mechanical knowledge and asking guys that ride the same thing. My late father tried and tried to get me to buy a Goldwing years ago but at the time my excuse was I didn't want a grandpa looking bike, not realizing their full potential and how great you can make them look, part of live n learn. So I'm starting my boys off on them so to speak as the oldest son has only ridden sport bikes in the past. This time he wanted another bike I told him I'd build it for him but only if he agreed for it to be a wing. He has been ridding it this past summer and absolutely loves the bike.

That was the first gl1000 i bought off my nephew, a car stopped quickly in front of him and his brakes were weak, so luckily the only thing that happen was bent forks. It had been setting outside for 3 years before I bought it. Needless to say 4k later she has great brakes and in a lot better shape. The 2nd gl1000 I'm currently working on I bought it down around Nashville Tn. I was told it was low millage the speed o showed 2297 miles, but I learned quickly that wasn't the truth and from the things I've seen while rebuilding it I believe it has been under water some time during its life. However with all the work I've done to it this far, she is close to being ready to live again. This one will be my youngest son's bike and this will be his first bike ever as he hasn't ever drove a motorcycle yet. Once I have it good as new, then time to teach him how to ride and of course he must complete a training course. Hopefully this summer my boys and I can enjoy ridding together as much as possible. Now the back story to all of this, after finally buying my first Gold Wing and ridding her for a couple years I decided to buy the 1st GL1000 with the bent forks for my intown run around bike. I was wanting something to putter around town on instead of my 1500. On fathers day my oldest son went with me to pick it up, on the way he ask why I wanted it. I showed him a few pics of cafe racer style bikes and after looking through a few pics he ask if I could make it look like one he loved, I told him yes I could and he said well then I'd like to have it. So wants a father to do, you build it for your son. While building it I ran across the 2nd GL1000 so my youngest son went with me and on the way back home he decided he'd like to have it if I could talk his mom into it. Well I told him that's problem not mine and I'm staying out of that. I agreed that if he could talk his mom into it then I'd build it for him. Well I'm a man of my word, he was able to talk his mom into it so I'm currently building it for him which still leave me without a run around town bike. Currently I have my eyes on a sweet looking F6B and my thought are neither son wants to spend that kind of money, so maybe, just maybe I'll get to keep it if I can make a deal and bring it home. While I absolutely love my 1500, I've always wanted a bagger style bike, so maybe soon I can have the best of both worlds for me, my 1500 for my long trips and my hopefully soon to be F6B for around town and short trip bike. Now if I'd listen to my father sooner when he tried to get me to buy a Gold Wing instead of the bike I bought there's no telling how many I'd own by now. LOL

Regarding those bent front forks and can they be straightened. I've heard they can be.

When I got my 79 Wing it had one very slightly bent fork, the other was good. So I dreamed up a red neck fork straightening rig. Started to get the bend out and at one point realized if I kept going this whole contraption would detonate and I would be severely injured, or worse. Got a pair of nice forks off ebay for $90. This fork is still bent.

Lesson learned. Some things just need to be left to the professionals.

Yes, the fork tubes can be straighten, they are made out of chrome molly, I think you need to bend it 1'' opposite way. Its been a while since I've done one. Also if you add a 1'' pipe fitting that's around 3/4'' long makes a great progressive shock set up using your stock springs, just place it between your spring and cap.
